Ok, Christmas Beta edition :D

Forgotten Heroes
Image

Install by unpacking all files into Data folder.

What is in:
  • 39 new heroes portraits replacing the old ones. In fact not all of them are mapped to standart heroes and it's going out like 2-3 heroes per faction. They bear names and bios, cough, cough - some of them are provisional.
  • HOTRAITS.TXT - is bearing the heroes names.
  • HEROBIOS.TXT - is having respective bios.
  • SPTRAITS.TXT - spell balance changes (DD, Town Portal, Mass Haste/Slow cost now more, Eartquake effect and price is doubled, Death Ripple, Destroy Undeads are slightly more powerful, Blind cost more and Hypnotize is stronger.)
  • ARTRAITS.TXT - some better descriptions for artifacts, to which you will get by right clicking on it.
  • TOWNNAME.TXT - few names changed to gets a new flavour.
  • CRTRAITS.TXT - here's speed of units I dunno forget which version it is, so they will be faster or the same.
  • FAQ_Hints.txt - some hints for changing the appearance of HommIII.

As soon as my fling with HoMM4 and the Util are done, I'll be getting back into WoG again. I miss the sharpshooters and werewolves and Gelu. :D
And when I do, I want to use them or at least test them out. Do you need any help in editing the text for the bios or anything like that? After all, it is one of my jobs on the WoG team you know... ;) :D

Great package Pol! Big thumbs up. I'm especially happy for Vesper. It was my favorite back in H2.

Yep, your help will be needed. Although I would send you the files when they will be completely customized. Now it's roughly about not even 1/3. (With exception of spells this appears to be final - I was careful with with them, however here maybe added later small 'wise cracks' - exactly in the style of H4, I didnt' abandoned idea of heroespedia integrated into game but ... ) And so on :D

Sounds good. I've been asked to complete the H4 Empires series that I have been working on, so this should work out for both of us. And, yeah, I'll look over the text editor and see how it works, when I complete the project I'm on now. Sound good to You? :)

A, good old faces, this is nice!!!

However, ARTRAITS.TXT and HEROSPEC.TXT are hard-coded right?
So extracting the mods into Data would not work...

Of course that it will works! In atraits.txt it'is changing artifacts price and description(+ could be slot and class in which I'm not interested) when in hotraits.txt are changed heroes names (and could be also starting army). This is both needed. (On the other hand herospec.txt it's composed only from descriptions, not having any other impact)

I'm cooking a better sauce around, not playing with internal values. (changing skills abilities, changing specialities etc ... this is all hardcoded and out of wog it cannot be so easy modified..)

I looked over the portraits you sent. They look good. Are you planning on putting them up on A6 soon?

I will include them in the fh patch but not yet - everything is having its own time ... and these will wait until I settle my mind. (in other words until they will be as good as I want them.)

Have you any idea why aren't this working for me? I followed the instructions in the readme, but the WoG exe just doesn't start. So I remowed them, and I played only the portraits in the data folder, and so they work.
Not that I care that much for the other changes, I'm just curious. But I'm very happy for the portraits, some of them keep alive the old times. That's unvaluable.

Pols' project is one of those projects that take time to perfect. He works on it when he has the time to. And if I believe correctly. it's not a WoG project as much as it's an H3 one. But I see him eventually working it in with WoG. It's just an extensive project. Working on it can send you in many directions.
I get the chance to look into the guts of this project, and I get lost in it. But I also see that once it becomes perfected, it will be fun to have. Keep it up Pol.

I never said, that isn't good. Contrarly it's a great one.
Thanks for the answer in any case.

P.S.: I think he isn't alone, with time lack. :)

Maybe you tried to copy also the text files? Only graphics will work everywhere but accompanying text files must be a bit adopted to live under WoG. (Because WoG is having more entries than SoD/C)

I will add a warning regarding that into next beta patch, if I don't forget.

Can I make those adaptations? Or thay are way complicated? If so than don't bother with explanation.
Thanks for the info.

No, they are easy ( relatively from my point of view.)

Simply compare wog original txt files with complete ones, notice the additional lines and add them. (or add changes into the wog files)

Three files are important to be changed, rest could be omitted and not copied.. These are herobios (if any change), atraits (probably needs to be changed), spelltraits (don't know). others aren't so important as for them already exits adequate wog versions, like for ctraits which is modyfing speed of units. They are scattered somewhere among the web and they will be in our yahoo wog archives too.

When patch will be done, or it won't be a beta I will assemble them myself.

Thanks again. Though I like to use complex mods only, I think I may try this one.

Haaa!

After long time I have discovered technique how to prevent any kind of artifacts in the picture.

Seemingly it all goes into image palette where the first entry must be unused (in my case default game background 0,255,255 color). Which fixes it.

example

Now any one know about blue defs for mages?

Hmm...? I don't understand exactly. You are speaking of the strange colour that a custom picture gets somtimes temporarly?
What are those blue defs for the mages?
