Fighting Heroic AI in a small map

Unread postby Kildars » 25 Nov 2007, 12:50

I can't figure out a way to fight the heroic difficulty AIs in a small area where you will encounter their forces very soon, considering the resource difference and their ability to...sometimes cheat. Does anyone have a good idea?
This isn't about creeping. It's a general question what to prepare for the upcoming invasion...you can't really build everyday in Heroic because of the money shortage, not to mention if there're no free resource at all.
Please share your opinion!

I haven't really played on heroic, so I'm unsure whether this would work, but this is what I'd do:

Play as Academy, pick Nur (best at getting early mines, almost infinite mana very early on) and try to get a Mage Guild level 5 as quickly as possible, along with expert of at least one magic skill before they get to you. Doesn't cost much gold, though costs lots of resources (probably too many to build a citadel before they get there). Also aim for magi (and a library if necessary), as stacks of just one mage can do lots of damage.

If you're lucky enough to get the right spells, you can beat an army much bigger than yours. I'll try this and let you know how it goes.

Thank you tb5841.
My problem with beating the AI in a small area is that I am trying to use Heaven or even Barbarian who normally don't have much spells to cast. So your reply here suggests, as I thought, in the early games magic hero will be stronger/ easier to play...
Please, if you'll try it, then try it in the map "Key to Victory"(which I've always been playing). There are almost no loose resource, and the AIs will reach you quite soon. And if you please, try the Barbarian...
Thanks!

I'm trying it with Academy first, just to get to know the map - I'll try Stronghold afterwards. Blue and Green both approached my castle on day 7 of week 3, the Blue hero then took out the Green one and spent a week stealing my mines instead of attacking my castle. Day 7 of week 4 I got bored and attacked him.

My hero was level 10, with 153 Master Gremlins, 51 Elemental Gargoyles and 31 Stone Golems. The enemy was level 15, with 27 Familiars, 24 Horned Grunts, 14 Hell Hounds, 11 Cerberi, 4 Succubi and 2 Pit Fiends. I had Expert Summoning Magic with Mark of the Wizard and Advanced Socery, and used Arcane Armour, Phantom Forces and Wasp Swarm, and the battle wasn't too difficult. Also had Advanced Light Magic - would have been much easier if I'd had Summon Pheonix or Divine Vengeance, but got unlucky with the mage guild.

However, needing to build troops so often has stopped me building all the buildings I wanted, so I'm about to start Month 2 without a capitol. I think my chances of winning this map are slim...

I'll let you know how I get on as Stronghold.

Aye, this map isn't easy for Might Factions! Don't you agree? I played once with Warlocks and that was alright.
With Might Factions I just need troop buildings and then I got no resource left for Magic Guild so no Mass Light magic......the only thing I could rely on is a balista.
Btw isn't the new sylvan faction way too powerful...?

I think might factions - particularly Stronghold - really will struggle on small heroic maps. There just aren't the resources to build enough in time.

Sylvan definitely seem the best mid-game team, but in very small maps I think Academy, Necropolis and Dungeon are more powerful. And on huge maps Fortress and Stronghold are incredible... I'm quite happy with the faction balance in TotE.

I tried playing Key to Victory on Heroic, as Stronghold. They got to me on day 1 week 3, and since I didn't have a fort to help me in town yet, I attacked them out of town. By then I'd built all the prerequisites to the Capitol, I had the first 5 unit buildings, a Resource Silo and the first mage-guild-type building. I took gold from every treasure chest.

Haggash (best choice of hero I reckon) was level 8, and had 28 goblins, 76 centaurs, 2 warriors, 1 shaman and 4 slayers (had more hirable troops, but no more money).

Lucretia was level 12, with 143 skeleton archers, 24 skeleton warriors, 73 rot zombies, 24 plague zombies, 6 vampires, and 2 wights.

I used Call of Blood constantly on my centaurs, and they were phenomenal. At the point the enemy retreated, I had 29 centaurs left, while they had 33 skeleton archers and 7 rot zombies. Wasn't as hard as I expected - choosing Haggash helped so much.

I see, the Centaur hero...
Well I started the map with some hero with Ballista equiped, got attacked by Sylvan in week 4, I had already built a good force but the enemy Sylvan was incredible, its Sharp Shooter(or whatever it's called) dealing lucky strike once in every 2 attacks. My 76~78 Centaur died in 2 hits:(
I think I will some time switch back to Heaven, the only faction I've been playing, and try the map under Heroic once more and see what happens.

I think you were quite unlucky to face Sylvan so early. If they'd been Fortress you'd have found it easy...

Yes!!! That's it......before the Sylvan reached my town I gave every thing I have to build a fort, but what help is fort anyway if they have lucky Sharp Shooters...lol
But I really wonder, is this map Key to Victory not often played? I have posted a similar post before and no one replied to it.

tb you are nice in responding to my question thanks......
