I like how the H5 archmage is arrogant and flaunts his wealth and power. He's less of a Gandalf-like Superman than the ones in 2 and 3.
He might not be tall and mighty-looking, but he doesn't let that bother himself.

A really tough choice, but I went with H5 Mage, for his originality. (And no glowing eyes.)

The H3 mages are pretty dangerous units, come to think of it. Thanks to their melee penalty, they have respectable combat stats at close range (comparable to swordsmen, demon and basilisks) and are extremely good in siege with their special. They might even be considered better individually than Zealots, a level 5 unit.
The upgrade is too expensive though, for what you get (only minor stat increases)
