Just remembered a The West Wing quote. "Natural cleansing fires are good for the environment". Which reminded me of a Judge Dredd quote: "Recycled food is good for the environment and OK for you".

But seriously, I get the feeling sometimes that we westerners can't get our heads around how desperate the situation is when something bad happens on the other side of the world. The reason so many people died and lost their homes in the tsunami was not just the landscape, but the fact that they were so poor to begin with; the infrastructure couldn't handle the disaster. The fires in Greece left thousands of people with literally nothing. Literally. There were people who had no insurance, no jobs after the crops had burned down, no house, nothing of value, nothing other than the clothes they wore. In the Western world I get the feeling that this desperate situation doesn't occur that often. The fires in California are being fought by a huge corps of fire fighters, the national guard is on their way, FEMA... these means can be implemented because the U.S. has the resources to do it. What happens after the fires are put out? People go back home. The houses that burned down are rebuilt. It's not the first time fires have raged the Californian forests. The story was a bit different as far as New Orleans goes, though...

I'll be fine. :)
I'm going to wait a bit though...to see what happens...having shown my intentions doesn't really give me a lot of manuevering room for now. :)

Yes! God rulez!!!!

Please God, punish these unholy unbelievers because you're great, mercifull and just!

God's wrath for our part of Global Warming - quite possibly.

Sometimes, I actually start to think that the Human population has grown to large for Mother Gaea to sustain. Perhaps all these 'natural disasters' are more akin to a dog shaking off some excess fleas.

Sadly, even Americans are having a bit of trouble mustering pity for the people in California. Many of the homes that have been burned were the multi Million dollar 'summer houses' of the rich and famous. When you're living pay check to pay check, it's hard to feel sympathy for someone who lost ONE of several homes because there was no one there to put out the smoldering ember on the roof.

Mind you, there were far more 'regular' people who have been hurt by these devastating fires. SEVEN counties have been declared a disaster area. Many elderly and sick people have been evacuated from nursing homes and are being housed in evacuation centers along with everyone else without adequate care. The state is begging for doctors and nurses to go help these people. But those people rarely get on the news. The attention keeps being turned on things like the house where Paris Hilton used to party burned down. Big fat hairy deal. She'll just go somewhere else.

Now, New Orleans getting flooded - AGAIN - that's pretty pitiful. The ones who are getting hit are the same people who were just trying to scrape by and get their lives back together. Most of them do NOT have the unlimited resources of the California Elite and what they DID have was used up after Hurricane Katrina.

Thanks, sweetie!

I've said it before, I'm not the jealous type. Extra marital affairs don't ruin relationships or fuel Jerry Springer. JEALOUSY is what does the damage.

by that logic only death would end relationships (or boredom).

And Jerry Springer is so fake...

You're kidding right? The cheater's infidelity is what ruins the relationship. The cheater is the one that destroys everything because they are too weak to control basic urges. I don't think jealousy stacks up to the complete breach of trust. If you think otherwise, go cheat on your spouse and tell him. Do you think you'd be divorced due to jelaousy that you slept with another man or him being totally pissed off that you cheated on him?
And the chickens. Those damn chickens.

One point though is that more people around means more people are likely to be hurt when disaster strikes, and thus the disaster gets bigger in our eyes. The same amount of fires in an unpopulated area would be a footnote in the news.

@winter: Why are we always in the same situations at the same time? 8|
So peculiar.

But I don't think you should wait it all out. What if the other friend moves in and seals the deal? That'd suck big time!

BTW, note who's participating in what conversations ;)

Um...she knows what I feel...it'd be counterproductive to try to force her to be with me. Staying at a proper distance...I can be naughty. LOL...now that I think of it, I flirt with her more now than I did before she found out!
