Something similar happened to me before, after installing a mod or alt-tabbing to the desktop, can't remember.

Since I don't use any mods whatsoever, it's safe to say that this is not the cause. It probably was to protect from acid rain; an Inferno kicks up an awful lot of sulfurous pollution.

That's a good argument! Probably the best you could bring forward! However this happend to me to a griffin after deinstalling a griffin-texture-mod.

Anyway I think this is the RESULT of acid rain because human kind did NOT protect nature!

Just so you guys know, this happens when the game doesn't find a texture (this is the default one). So yeah, a MOD could have done this, but insufficient memory is also a possibility.
