The Best Expansion Ever

Unread postby Corribus » 15 Aug 2007, 14:25

In the news forum, TOE Videos and Shots thread, this was posted:
If ToE has less bugs then former games, then it might be one of better expansions ever released.
That may be jumping the gun a bit, but it brings up an interesting question: what IS the best expansion pack ever released, for any game? The EP that gave the most new content, and the best value for the dollar? Any opinions?

That's a good one Titan. I'd also put Hordes of the Underdark and Throne of Bhaal up there.
And the chickens. Those damn chickens.

The Starcraft crowd really liked Brood Wars, but it was a little too much for me. I expect Beyond the Sword to be really good, but maybe not the best expansion ever.

I was going to say Brood Wars also, though I got a little tired of it towards the end.

Best expansion this far is probably Revelations II for EVE-online, and I guess when Revelations III will come, that will be the best expansion ever. And they're all free of charge, of course, so ppl don't have to pay for new expansions :D

@Chai: :rofl:

I agree though...Brood Wars and LOD were two of the best expansion packs ever made.

To put it more bluntly...I used to HATE D2. I started really getting into it after I got the exp. pack. :D

IMO...LOD = best expansion pack ever made.

I reckon Throne of Bhaal would have to be up there .... 40 odd hours of gameplay, feats, highest level spells .... great storyline .... tough to beat considering it has more content than most full release games

The end boss was way too annoying and it irritated me that it was pretty obvious that's she's up to no good from the second of seeing her muttering bhaalspawns here, main characters couldn't do anything about to reveal her laughable plot. SoA and especially original Baldur's Gates had way better storylines IMO.

I got Beyond the Sword, it's solid expansion but not anything groundbreaking.

HOMM 3 Armageddon's Blade was also a good one, azure dragons rule!
C&C Generals Zero Hour , impressive but still quite lackluster

I don't know which is the best but I'll say some good ones
Lord of Destruction, Broodwar, The Frozen Throne, The Titans, The Warchiefs, Rise of the Witch King, Zero Hour, Yuri's Revenge

Actually, the piece of text you cited makes no such claims. It says "one of the better expansions"... which is far from "the best expansion ever".

Anyhow, I'd go for Brood War and The Frozen Throne as the most obvious candidates.

Throne of Bhaal is pretty good in terms of new gamehours, but for me it falls short simply because it goes too far. I like the early levels of rpg's, when my character(s) reaches demigod status it's not as fun anymore. For that reason I like Tales of the Sword coast better than Throne of Bhaal, Shadows of Undrentide (sp?) better than Hordes of the Underdark. Lowlevels are more fun :)

Beyond the Sword is really good though, but could use an official patch sometime last week. But content-wise it's great, I have my hands full trying to teach Kalah about the new stuff and how it works

Tales of the Sword Coast was good, and to a degree I agree with you about the low level stuff being more fun, but then there's watchers keep .... and some other insane enemies, plotting their downfall is fun when you get it right! :)

In terms of content BW wasn't that good... but in terms of gameplay it rocked.

It's interesting how atm expansions seem to be getting more and more content (Dawn of War had new races and units in each expansion, C&C3 is getting sub-factions with new units, H5 is getting alt upgrades and a new faction etc). Hope this trend lasts.
