Civ IV
I am hopelessly hooked. I've been at FFH for two straight days now. A couple of things to note: It is based on vanilla CIV4 so you do not need Warlords. And expect to be confused at first by all the strange names, the markedly different tech tree, and the bewildering number of units, promotions, spells, etc. It's (almost) all there in the 'pedia.
As to traits, a Spiritual leader for instance will frequently switch civics according to the situation, since there is no anarchy. A Financial leader will settle the coastal areas to reap 3g from ocean squares. An Industrious leader will go after hammers to build Wonders. A Philosophical will set up great person farms.
And one piece of advice for a newbie -- never trust Monty. He will attack you no matter what you do.

Note: Fall from Heaven I is the first mod Kael made. The Fall from Heaven that me and Caradoc are talking about is number II, which is, as I said, at version 0.23.Corribus wrote:Wow that looks really cool. Is it playable?
The team has four phases in mind for the development of the mod: Light, Fire, Shadow and Ice. Version 0.23 (which is a part of Fire) will be the last version for Vanilla, while Shadow and Ice will be for the Beyond the Sword expansion pack, because of the new modding possibilites it gives.
Kael&Team intend to polish 0.23 as much as possible in order to make it an enjoying experience for people who won't buy BtS. In fact, it already is quite polished. Check it out

What difficulty do you guys play at? And what victory condition do you usually go for? And what's your favorite faction to play as?

It's like HOMM. At first you stick to one faction until you have mastered it and then move to the next. You end up going random. Start at Warlord and when you think you are ready, bump it up. I'm still not to Deity. On a Small map you can win by conquest. Larger ones try the space race. For a completely different experience, try a cultural victory. Diplomacy is quirky and depends on who your opponents are.
For starting out with CIV4, I suggest a Financial or Creative leader. Catherine and Victoria would be good choices. I can't remember whether the Cherokee are in the base game. I remember liking them a lot. Ghandi is fun because of his fast workers.
I suppose it really depends on your style of play. The civs are quite well balanced IMHO. In any case, you are going to want Mining or Agriculture to start with, and with Fishing you can spend your first few moves building work boats (if you have seafood) and let your city grow. With Hunting, you start with a Scout which makes Goodie Huts even goodier.

And Beyond the Sword is very, very good, as far as expansions go. More spying, you can have privateers working for you, more civs, reworked a lot of combat stuff, and did I mention the privateers? I especially like that the AI has been improved, lessening the need for cheating (as in financial bonuses). I usually stick to Noble difficulty, as it is the most "even" one. For me, beating an AI that cheats rampantly doesn't really feel like a good challenge, then I rather play on a more "fair" level and try less hard to win. Gives room to mess around more.
But I have a weird problem I thought I'd mention, just in case anyone here could shed some light on it. Namely that having my wireless network connection activated causes civ to freeze up totally, so that I have to reboot the PC. I know it's soemthing with the net because it only started happening yesterday when I got it on. It happens within 15 minutes usually, half an hour the longest. Needless to say this is unplayable. But if I deactivate the network connection, it's all good and stable for hours and hours on end (just tested that).
What could the connection be here, that messes up the game? Firewall has civset as an exception, and anyway I tried with the firewall of and no help, still froze. And it shouldn't go messing around on the net while I play singleplayer anyway.

What sort of victory did you have in mind (space race, conquest, domination, time, cultural, diplomatic)?

Ah. Well possibly the easiest misconception one can make in regards to war in this game is that your friends, however good your relations are, WILL turn on you if they think they can beat you easily. This go for any leader (or at least many, not quite certain): if they see a nice juicy piece of land with little to no defence, they will come for you. But there are quite a bit of difference between them. Some are cautious and honourable, some are stark raving mad warmongers who will come for you even if they have no chance of winning. Montezuma is in the last category Shaka is another to be feared, because while he might not be as crazy, he's aggressive. Isabella and some others are religious zealots who will want to crush the infidels, aka anyone with a different religion, at most any cost. But I'm not much into how each reacts, I treat them all as potential threats.
So more important than good relations is a healthy standing army. More tropps needed in bordercities of course.
As for how to balance strenght and economy and similar stuff, you mgiht want to look at Civ-dedicated sites, like Civ Fanatics or Apolyton for more thorough guides. But generally building cottages is good, to get money for faster research. And make good use of slavery and chopping of forests to get troops fast if there's a threat, or to finish important wonders.

Me, I won't be able to play on this computer until I get a DVD-ROM... But even so, I'm not sure whether this PC meets the minimum requirements. And 0.25 is coming out soon with all those changes
