Sylvan

Unread postby farius » 06 Feb 2006, 11:57

is it just me, or is this race just too good? their speed + initiative let them act too often...

i fought 3 battles

1 battle: syl vs necro: my necro army was twice as big due to my skeletons but the shadow dragon, the wraight and were the only ones acting two or three times... zombies, skel archers ghosts had one turn each
another thing are the pixies/sprites they square almost the whole battlefield in one turn and attack 3 stacks at once without relatiation... i'd be ok for me, but in my battle, 300 sprites killed 90+ skel archers, and when the archers had their turn, all the 1.3k killed about 100 sprites...so are the pixies a lil overpower? due to stats they have the second highst hp, the highest initiative.

2 battle:syl vs dungeon: again the same problem, the syl gold dragon crossed the battlefield in first turn(and hey, this dragon quiet rocks) the pixies blocked my shooter(s) and absorbed a lot of damage, the unicorns and wardancers had their turns(vorgott, my black dragon had his turn somewhere between pixies and wardancers). i really dont know if my hydras even had one turn...(and there is a lil excurse to slow units:ok hydra is slow and so on, the treant is slow too, but he has way the most hp of lvl 4)

3 battle: syl vs inferno: same problem, gold dragen AND pixies acted and then my devils...the pixies managed to block my succubi/horned/Balor, the syl gold dragon blocked the nightmares wow, so the elves and druids killed me from distance, pixies(just them nothing else) blocked a half of the battlefield, gold dragons blockt the nightmares...(the treants and unicorns just stood there as backup)

has anyone a good strategie against syl? (maybe i'm just a lame gamer but i played all games hotseat gainst myself so "the opponent wasnt better and more tacticall ^^)

i think syl is way too strong even if their racial ability seems to be one of the weakest! cut the speed of some units, make the bf bigger and bring black dragon back to the thrown as THE DRAGON ;)

Ask any of the Open Beta Helpers which town is the most powerful and we'll all say Sylvan. The poll results here on CH are nowhere close to the real estimation, I can assure you of that. Sylvan has only one slow unit, every other has extremely high initiative and damage output. Couple that with Avenger and Absolute luck and you'll get a clear winner vs any other town.

If you cant win against Sylvan, there are always alternatives for combat ;)
Bet on weaken them as much as possible then have an ally and/or reserve troops to back you up.

Just curious are the Gold dragon gold or does it have the Gold Dragon name but are emerald green?

And yes Blackie should be the best dragon this time too, 50+ hp and +1 in attack and defense would be fine, the dmg is great as it is.

last time I checked invocation allows you to buff your blackies while they'd still be immune to negative spells.

if that would be used properly wouldn't that make the blackies better than goldies?

But the goldies can also be buffed!

If you aske me, those wooden/grand elves do way a lot damage, considering they shoot twice. Druids also have some powerfull damaging spells, sprites can reduce the enemy's initiative while damagaing them at the same time, Gold dragon are among the strongest lv7 creatures not taking into account their high initiative while war dancers and treants arent bad units at all.

You know, this sort of imbalance may be the balance were all crying about.I mean silvan has such a weak special compared to the other factions(Im talking just about the special, not about what it can lead to later),so it has overpowered troops.Academy has a very strong special to boost its low levels, but its high levels loose because of this.

Then again, this could be just lame excuses and a lot of "fine tuning" needs to be done in orther to balance things out.

High levels lose because of it? So an initiative, speed, luck, defense, offense ect is useless on titans? Sure no one in the right mind would add hp or damage upgrade on titans, but there is plenty to choose from for any troop level.

The thread got split, so I'll ask this question again -- How does the Sylvan Town's economy hold up against other towns? Are their buildings and creatures more expensive?
Far too many people speak their minds without first verifying the quality of their source material.

Actually, of all towns the sylvan is the CHEAPEST. The most expensive ones are Academy and Dungeon.

Academy gets the horde dwelling for genies that also provides 500 gold a day. So even though they are exspensive it never really feels like it.

I agree with the overall opinion here about the Sylvan faction. I suppose all these powerful abilites, tied in with initiative, is the reason that their special, favored enemy, is not as powerful as the other factions. Just a thought, but that is likely the reason.

Wow. Now it turns out that this thread, which was formerly 5 pages long, was 80% off-topic. Now that everything about simultaneous retal has been trimmed off, theres only one page left. A tad bit ironic, isn't it?

Anywaaay, about the Sylvan town, its quite surprising that it has turned out so strong. Judging by their special, I expected them to be a very sneaky sort of town which has to stay in the background and avoid direct combat, but now it turns out that they have a great deal of heavy strong units and the like. Combined with their cheap price, they do happen to be rather unbalanced. I do hope this'll get smoothed out a bit during the tweaking/balancing.
Happy Millenium!

weren't some of the factions supposed to be easier and some more difficult to provide more of a challenge to experienced players? I am not so sure that this is a balancing issue if the factions were not supposed to be balanced in the first place....

I kinda like the Sylvan town. It's nice, and the units are fast and deadly.

I hope it's as strong as the Nature town in Heroes IV and the Rampart town in Heroes III - keep the elven strength up.

I think that Sylvan is also way over powered. Even an overly cautious player [me] can expand very quickly with the way druid spells work. To some degree you don't even need them as their low level melee units are probably the best in the game and elves aren't bad either :)

I find it funny that the Devil is as slow as it is. The teleport ability acts exactly the same as the flying ability, so there's nothing special with that.
Devils SHOULD really be the fastest unit, or atleast have acces to the WHOLE battlefield in one turn (with normal initiativ ofcourse). Seriously.
