It comes from Fried, a small East-German village, where Heinz "Chicken" Kentucky had a small restaurant in the 19'th century.

Anyway, here's Mickey Mouse trying to off himself: http://www.barnaclepress.com/comics/arc ... index.html

How did cartoons end up as being considered kiddie fare anyhow?

Back before TV, cartoons were seen as shorts before movies. Disney was the main provider and when they moved into full length pictures they wanted to exploit the ability of the medium for fantasy -- mainly fairy tales -- which was extremely expensive to do in live action.

Of course cartoons are easy for children to view because of the clear delineation. And they showed well on TV, which at first was starved for content. (When I was a kid, the TV would go off the air in the early afternoon!) Cartoons made for inexpensive daytime programming. Later, Hannah Barbera began making cartoons just for TV -- Huckleberry Hound was their first -- and these ran in the afterschool timeslot.
