One line sticks out on the Wikipedia page for Elfen Lied:

Throughout the series there are various incidences of human sadism, casual beatings, cruel experimentation, pedophilic rape and outright killing. The series has drawn criticism as being "overly blatant"[14] or "sad and forced"[17] in this regard.
And the chickens. Those damn chickens.

Well I don't actually remember seing actual pedophilia in Elfen Lied. I mean, no more than in your average anime :devious: But there's already a lot to be shocked about in this show...

That reminds me, why are anime pushing schoolgirls in uniforms so much? It seems like they are some sort of pinnacle of sexuality for japanese people, even though they look like 15 year olds..

15 year olds are the pinnacle of sexuality.... old enough to have everything but young enough not to be very used. I could go on, but that's one conversation i'd been trying to forget.

BTW, no one can help with this:

I watched Akira the other night.

I liked it for about the first 75%... but it totally lost me at the end. I am kind of pissed I wasted two hours for such a dumb, nonsensical ending.

That was pretty much my reaction to it, decent start, terrible ending.

So why do people treat it like it's the greatest animated film ever?

Beats me. ;|

But I've heard that a lot (the line about Akira being the best animated film ever).

I have no idea. I also think Ghost in the Shell is heavily overrated.

I actually liked that one, though the ending was a bit strange. I thought the tv episodes were better than the movie.
