X-COM: TFTD

Unread postby Kalah » 27 Jun 2007, 00:33

I was hooked on this game back in the day, and I was wondering if anyobdy knew somewhere I could get hold if a version suitable for XP... I'd love to play s'more of this - I stopped after the game crashed (savegame corrupted) in the middle of my first successful alien base capture...

Furthermore, any war stories out there? I can tell you about mine, the last one: I had killed off most of the alien UFOs that had landed, and I had several (two or three, I think) bases up and running, when suddenly there was this alien base popping up. I sent three shuttles, determined to wipe it off the face of the Earth. After terrible battles, my first two shuttle crews were killed off by the defending aliens. My last crew went in. I kicked @$$. I sent a guided missile to take care of the last aliens, and when it blew, the victory screen came up. I must have spent five or six hours on that raid.
Then the game crashed.... :(

Woah...

Hmm...you could try to find the compilation MicroProse made a few years ago...I have a copy of it (it's 2 CDS...one has UFO Defense and TFTD....and the second one has Apocalypse.)

War stories? Hmm...my party members kept getting mind controlled or berserked. Nothing like wiping your whole crew out with one of your own weapons...:disagree:

This game is HARD!!! I could never get past the first few battles...they start sending those irritating 120 movement aliens that go melee...:S

DOS version under dosbox or qemu is performing quietly well. Here is also ufo2000, which is free addon, to multiplayer.

I never finished it, I think that I maximally get 9 of theirs 12 bases. And I always inflate my budget in hexaeditor. From other point I love ufopedia and here are several sites devoted to this game, also here are some bugs in scientific tree which you need to avoid.

Things are started to be hot when MC comes to play, so in that phases I mostly bring yourself some weapon mobile platfrom. Torpedoes are sometimes so much fun :D (...generating tens of panicked alliens, arghhh.)

I still have my original copies of those games and they had me as addicted as MOO, many lost weekends playing them. There is just nothing out there I find as addicting. :(

You might take a look at the UFO: Aftermath series. Clearly inspired by XCOM.

(Yep, MOO, X-COM, and CIV ate up a whole lot of my time back in the good 'ol days. Too bad only CIV survived.)
