Summoning Magic, Luck, Attack and Enlightenment seem to be good choices, IMO.

Dark and dark are a good cornerstone. Then it's up to you to go all magic or a hybrid.
I, for one, am dying to find out what colour they paint Michael's toenails.

Summoning Magic, Dark Magic, Enlightenment, and Sorcery should do you good.
And the chickens. Those damn chickens.

what abilities would be of most use to me?

i was thinking of getting bone ward, lord of the undead, all the master of... in dark and summoning magic and expert necromancy, would this setup work well? i am not a beginner at this game, its just that i had a lot of trouble during the necromancer campaign and i wanted to do this a bit easier than the last time

Boneward will not be as useful, arcane training will suffice.
Lord of undead while useful is not really necessary.
Master of for summoning are not really useful though master of earthblood for firetrap and conjuration for phoenix are nice to have.
And master of pain is not too necessary as well.

For starters get master of mind/curses with expert dark magic, expert summoning magic and enlightenment->intelligence, sorcery-> arcane training. Get at least advanced summoning from the first mission and build the mage guild in the dungeon town located in the underground ;) It will help with the next mission.

Assuming you want to try this specific combo of skills that is :)

Dont for master of life, that one saves is a must IMO if I go for summoning, also haunting mines makes you harvest ghosts in no time, I luv it :D

Forgot that part, most important! Nothing like seeing wraiths coming back 10 at a round :D
