Which way do you take your favorite heroes???

Unread postby gravyluvr » 05 Jun 2007, 21:48

I find myself training my heroes in certain slants and I was wondering if anyone else did that?

Examples?

Regina - Warden

Oris - Demonologist or Archmage

I have no such inclinations. I choose the advanced class pretty randomly, or according to what skills are available on the map in the form of altars, seminaries, etc...

Same here. Plus I also tend to employ male heroes as well.

I usually develop my heroes to compliment each other's skills & classes … like Guildmaster, Lord Commander, General or Field Marshall with Monk, Enchanter, Summoner or Prophet (I really like this one). Usually though, my magic heroes eventually end up becoming Archmages … which is okay too.

Other times I mix heroes & heorines who look like they might make lovely couples together … such as:

Actually my heroes don't have any influence on me to choose their class, but like HodgePodge I like having male&female in army, however, to distinguish them on the battlefield :P (2 druids), not to make them a couple...

Maybe it's offtopic but would it be better to classify heroes in adv. classes by their biographie or the picture?
I find your topic very useful for considering Destiny:

how do you 'train' heroes the way you want?

Unread postby Charles J Lee » 09 Jul 2007, 16:44

Gravyluvr, I'm kinda surprised that you actually have a 'choice' on how to train your heroes.

Getting a General or Warlord from, say, a Lord or Barbarian isn't hard. But most specializations are a pain to get. Even when I play Gauldoth, for some reason the AI just won't give me Nature skills. I actually rose 10 levels without any Nature skills offered even once.

Wizard, Demonologist and Dark Priests are some of the most excruciatingly hard skills to get. And if I get an advanced combat skill... ugh! Do you consciously avoid upgrading your combat skills in order to keep your heroes in their specializations?

Furthermore, how do you get Tawni (I"m assuming it's the Balfour from the Campaign) to be a Seer? Not as if she gets Order skills. I can only get her to go the Ranger route.

Do you first build up Tawni's Combat, then her scouting, before Order skills? So the Seer part only kicks in at or after the 3rd map?

Death gets no Nature or Life until advance class. Many times you have to depend on a building or altar of magic to help with your advance class. Think of it this way - whichever class you can't hire from your town tavern are the two types of magic your basic class will never be offered.

A Chaos magic hero won't be offered magic from either Order or Life w/o help or an advanced class. And the Advanced Class can be hard to get away from once created. I will always go Seer with a thief if I can get it, but 80% of the time they end up ranger or Fire Deviner. I go into the editor to enable Tawni because I like her character. In the campaign I take her the combat route right away.

Exactly. I wait until I have Grand Master Primary Skill before I advance my class. A lot maps (especailly fan-made) will give you an alter or building.

Take nature as an example (substitute as needed) with Basic Nature, Basic Herbalism (starting class). I always take Nature before Herbalism before Meditation and take nothing else. If you always take these three skills and opt to go for no combat or summoning, you will gain the GrandMaster skill faster. By doing that, you won't have to decide between combat vs. summoning because the third skill offered will always be one of the three, hence you don't have to take the "fork" in the road that leads you off your path.

With Archer I'll take Archery over Combat over anything else. With Barbarian I'll take Combat over Melee over Magic Rest.

The goal is to get to Grand Master as fast as you can, no matter the skill. Advance Skills are fun to play with but nothing substitutes for GM skill. Also, if you keep in your primary skill you may find that altar or building along the way that will allow you to create that demonologist or enchanter.

Actually, it usually will if it has the basic skill for the first two or three level ups. Beyond that, it's all about combat and the class skill(s).

I don't often have hard & fast rules on who I train into what advanced class. I will read over hero bios and I might develope based on their bios but that's not a hard & fast rule.

Probably the only guaranteed rule that I have is that I always take COMBAT with my heroes.

If I have the ability to train up 2 heroes then I usually go with one hero that will buff my troops [like a general] and one spell caster.
