Hello everyone!
I have recently found the charm of the HoMM games. I started with Heroes III and i liked it very much. I have now bought HoMM 5 and i want to get a better understanding of the game.
I have tried the search function and looked for some newbie guides, i can't find any though!
If you could point my into the direction of some threads with some valuable information for beginners i would appreciate it.
Also, are there any mods or maps i should get, or should i stick with the original game + expansion only?
Thanks in advance!
Help for Newbies.
Hello there and welcome to the boards.
Imho, I suggest you to try the game as it is at first, just patching it using the official updates you can find at https://www.celestialheavens.com where you have a menu on your right. Select Heroes V, then, on your left you'll see some information regarding units, castles, spells, abilities and some reviews.
For a good guide, not official, but good nevertheless
, here:

After you have explored all features the game has to offer, you could use any mods. Another tip: soon (months, I think), there'll be a new release, expansion pack stand alone that'll have many interesting things. You should navigate a bit at celestial heavens to look further into gaming stuff.
See ya!

Thanks for the replies!
I feel stupid for not finding those excellent strategy guides myself, i searched the forum but forgot to look on the main page!
Also, im looking forward to get into some online battles but not quite yet. I think i will have to play a few custom games versus the computer first!
Is there a race you would say is easier to start with then others?
Also, when i face the enemy in late game he can resurrect his creatures all the frickin' time, drives me insane! I will have a look at that skill wheel and try to figure out how to get that skill myself.
My biggest problem right now is probably that im not choosing the best skills and abilities. But from what i have gathered from reading a few posts it is better to have a alot of different (but weaker) skills then just going with one path? Im trying to do that, but most of the time i just choose something and don't really now if it is the best skill to choose.
And another thing, heh, how many heroes do you guys usually have on a normal map versus 1 enemy? I build one hero at the first day (or second if i don't have a tavern) and give his troops to my main hero. Then i just play with my main hero and let my second hero stay in town. Sometimes i load the town-hero with troops and run to my main to unload them before sending him back to town again. So im actually only using one hero the entire time.

I always start Heroes games playing with humans (in this case, Haven), because it has a well balanced range of units, by foot, ranged and flying with interesting abilities and average statistics.Pyrrhon wrote: Is there a race you would say is easier to start with then others?

It can happen if the player is not returning their castle to buy units and group them, so, you kill a wandering hero whilst at castle, there are many units awaiting for hiring. And if enemy doesn't spend money, he'll be able to buy as much as he can, so that can happen too. Also, when i face the enemy in late game he can resurrect his creatures all the frickin' time, drives me insane! You must try combinations anyway. Focus on what that hero must be - killer, explorer, supporter. That's the main idea, imho. After you settle that, you'll look at the skill wheel for further ado in that subject, trying to follow that path you've chosen.
I play almost like you do, but I use 2 active heroes mainly, while 1 keeps around the castle. 1 hero will kill troops and conquest areas. The other one explores areas, picking up resources, flagging mines and taking units from castle to the main hero. When I conquest another castle, I make another hero in there and the one that was the secondary hero, becomes another important one.And another thing, heh, how many heroes do you guys usually have on a normal map versus 1 enemy? Lord (main hero)And another thing, heh, how many heroes do you guys usually have on a normal map versus 1 enemy? Squire (follows the main hero; buys creatures from dweling that can be used by my main hero; leads my reserve units; collects resources and campfires when my main hero kills its guardians)
Governors (protects endangered cities; if city becomes safe, he changes his city or title into brigand or squire)
Brigands (explores the map and wreaks havoc in enemy land (read: drives theme mad) while my main hero is elsewhere)
Secondary main heroes (like main hero, just aligned with conquered city; sometimes I give him a squire)
This may not be the best strategy, but I like the realism
