What bothers me is how much attention the story gets. She broke the law. That's it. People have too much time on their hands if they can worry about her. I say they are jealous of her because she's a billionaire heiress who gets paid thousands to go to parties. Who isn't jealous of that?

That's a really hard question to answer. That's like here, in Brazil. As I told some time ago, there this edition of Big Brother here (7th, for God sake ) and the guy who won, not only him actually, but who got on TV, today, are going all around the country as celebrities. On the news today, it was that "the winner and a girl will spend the day together". So what? It's Valentine's Day (in this country) and tons of people will be together. That's just too - hum - much of a waste of air.

The other day, a woman (also from Big Brother and was out early in that stage) who is from my city was ice skating on the Shopping Center and reporters were all in a fuss about it. Then, one asked: "How come that you like to ice skate, dear?"

Ok, wait a second...what kind of question is that? The rest of the interview was no better. Actually, it was so damn stupid that it was kinda fun.

Just because someone is famous and rich for essentially doing nothing does not mean they are intelligent. She is attractive and comes from a very wealthy family. Luck and chance probably plays a part. If she had neither of those, she wouldn't be famous. So intelligence one way or the other really has nothing to do with it.

Is she intelligent? I don't know - it's somewhat unfair to judge someone's intelligence, be it Paris Hilton or George Bush, by how they are portrayed by the media. Shows like "The Simple Life" intentionally make her look stupid, so perhaps we are being fed a false impression. But whether or not she is intelligent, I think it's fair to say that she brings very little to the table. At least with other actors/musicians, you can say that they contribute to our entertainment by making movies or music, and so their celebrity status sort of makes some sense. But Paris Hilton is essentially a charlatan: she's famous for being famous and nothing else.

What I find reprehensible is that we put her on a pedestal because she represents what most people these days want: make lots of money, be popular, and essentially have to do nothing to achieve that. Our modern society is based not on a desire to improve the state of the world, or to improve ourselves through hard work and determination. We no longer believe that the ideal person is someone who works hard, who is intelligent, who strives to be a great artist, or scientist, or philanthropist, or builder, or thinker/philosopher, or someone who cares about learning. We believe that the ideal person is someone who has no responsibility and can basically have carefree fun and that's it. In my opinion Paris Hilton is a microcosmic example of the sad state of modern role-models, and the poor standard that we now set for our children to strive for.
