What do you TIVO? (NO SPOILERS PLEASE)

Unread postby gravyluvr » 05 Jun 2007, 15:52

I've decided to create a different topic from LOST (and other shows) since this would be more about what we watch and why, instead of what's going on in our favorite shows... Plus with many shows off for the summer, I find my tivo is running out of shows and recording reruns... I need ideas!

What do you TIVO and Why?

My Network recordings include:
Sunday - Simpsons, Family Guy
Monday - Heroes, 24, CBS Comedies
Tuesday - House
Wednesday - Lost, Medium
Thursday - Earl-Office-Scrubs, Grey's Anatomy

I only DVR Lost and House, and of course NFL games in the fall. Over the summer I DVR almost nothing, because summer TV sucks. I was really hoping NBC would re-air Heroes this summer, but it seems they are sticking to web-casts, so instead of getting to watch it in 50 inches of HD glory, I'm stuck to 4 inches of bad streaming video. :disagree:

I watch my shows live or don't watch them at all. I don't own a DVR.

That will change now that you have a fancy TV. :)

@cocor
That doesn't mean you can't watch those shows.

I use my DVR in the way that horrifies TV executives; I use it to FF through the commercials. I tivo Numb3rs, Cold Case, LO: CI, Without a Trace, CSI, CSI:Miami, CSI:NY, and specials such as Planet Earth. By flying through the commercials the show reduces down to about 47 minutes. :D

Big CBS fan I take it?

And Numb3rs is pretty good. It's really grown on me this past season.

Planet Earth almost killed my tivo when they ran the marathon. I had it set to record every show.

I zip through commercials too - but the pause and rewind feature is priceless.

I fell in love with TIVO at my friends Super Bowl XXVIII party. We all agreed that the TIVO feature was the hit of the party. I'll bet a lot of people missed the JJ wardrobe malfunction but we must have watched it 100 times.

Planet Earth was available here On Demand. That's how I watched them, and yes they were fantastic. AS if you want to get something to showcase your new home theater, they are highly recommended.

Not particularly, but it has turned out that way. I have occasionally used a Numb3rs episode as a lesson for the math class I teach.

Tell me about it, I had set it to record 3 of the episodes in HD and it took over 50% of my DVR's capacity 8| .

I wouldn't mind one, but I'd end up recording a heap of stuff and then not finding the time to watch it .... so might give it a miss .... on second thoughts I might have some spare time coming up :)

I learned very quickly that Tivo makes your decisions for you.

When I first set up the recordings I recorded a ton of stuff - but the box filled up very quickly and eventually I erased stuff without watching it. After that I started removing show from the box that I thought I wanted to watch - but not as much as other shows.

I've cycled in/out CSI, CSI:Random City, Law and Order*, Meet the Press, SNL*, Daily Show Colbert Report*, Bones, Rescue Me*, Dirt, The Shield, etc. The TIVO is awesome for specials and mini series too (like Planet Earth, The American Revolution, etc)

Since I am capable of operating a VCR, I am able to record shows without paying the Tivo tax. I use it when I'm out of town or when there are conflicts like 24/Heroes.

My Comcast cable box comes with a DVR, so I have no extra charge for mine.

The best thing about it over a VCR, aside from not having to use those enormous cassettes, is that you lose no playback quality (you can DVR HD broadcasts) AND all the schedules are integrated so all it takes is a single click. Mine also knows what time my show comes on each week, and can be set to not record reruns, and can also track the show if the network changes its airing time. Finally, it is a dual recorder, meaning I can record two shows that are aired at the same time, actually at the time time I'm watching a third show!

And you can't pause and rewind live TV with a VCR. You save a lot of time not watching commercials. :)

Just finished watching the first season of Big Love on HBO On Demand. New season starts tomorrow at 9PM EST.

Summer seasons are also starting for the following shows:

Big Love on HBO 6/11
Rescue Me on FX 6/13
Dead Zone on USA 6/17
Entourage on HBO 6/17
Dr. Who on SCIFI 7/6
Eureka on SCIFI 7/10
Monk on USA 7/13
Damages on FX 7/24
Flash Gordan on SCIFI 8/10

My TIVO is empty right now so I'm looking at these shows over the summer to give me something new to see on TV.

If anyone has any other shows I should check out, post them here.

More summer viewing -- Traveler is looking pretty good after 2 episodes and there may be a couple more Studio 60s. Also for 'reality' fans, Last Comic Standing.

with the possible exception of monk (which I haven't seen on telly for a while) I have heard of none of those .... but a suggestion if you get it .... watch "Thank God You're Here", it's been syndicated and I think NBC bought the rights

there's a few clips here

I do have traveler and studio 60 recording...

unfortunately studio 60 wasn't renewed for the fall (one and done)

Also, Thank God Your Here (poor man's Whose Line) was also cancelled.

Studio 60 was doomed because it had to go up against CSI: Miami which personally I would think would have a similar audience. Then again... Heroes was able to survive against 24 (Thank God for TIVO). I liked it but it sounds like the expense required a better ratings show. You would think that it would have had a better chance following Heroes.
