>I agree. Being a woman, I am disgusted by this cheap and shameless mode of advertising.
That's a typical feminist complaint. Now, look around. How often are images of half-naked men on advertisements? I'd say frequently. So, why do women complain about young and sexy babes showing their bodies in the cover pages? Because it is culturally unacceptable? Now, that's being sexist, isn't it?
Sorry, I don't mean to offend.

Besides, it's not just the females that are semi-nude in HoMM - some of the male units are too (e.g. blade dancer). It's aesthetics, who cares really?

Feminist complaint? Not really. How does images of "half-naked men" make this okay? Besides it would be cheap & shameless even if it were men who were being exploited too. Two wrongs don't make a right!ywhtptgtfo wrote:That's a typical feminist complaint. Now, look around. How often are images of half-naked men on advertisements? I'd say frequently. Unfortunately, too many people make immature excuses for those who use trashy ads on TV, in magazines & on the Internet … whether male or female.

Actually, my chief complaint with Heroes 5 has been the Dungeon town -- I'm just less vocal about complaining than some people I could mention.
But I've disabled the close-up camera for that reason among others.
Did you see the flak NWN2 got because you can't strip characters down to their underwear?
It's rather annoying that Heroes V is not a game I can play with my nephews when they visit.
How often do I complain about those? Just as frequently, if not more so. I've mentioned to more than one Wal-Mart manager the hypocrisy of claiming to promote family values by not carrying Playboy when they have about 12 women's magazines on display with articles on sexual technique.ywhtptgtfo wrote:That's a typical feminist complaint. My wife doesn't like the War Dancer upgrade for that reason -- he lost his pants when he got promoted.moragauth wrote:Besides, it's not just the females that are semi-nude in HoMM - some of the male units are too (e.g. blade dancer). It's aesthetics, who cares really?

I think Dungeon is fine. In fact, it is my favourite faction, and I think its metalhead fashion style is great. What is it with you puritan types? If you guys don't like the (semi)nudity, buy some other game. Or ask the developers to put in some feature to disable it.
If Dungeon gets you irate, I cannot imagine what the Sprite and Succubus must do.

I looks like the artist based his work on a Sports Illustrated model, and added elvish clothes (and a strategically-placed horn, but maybe that's just me seeing things). I understand that we must use the human body to promote clothes, perfume or hair products. But a strategy game? How long until I end up staring at a pair of boobies on my box of Frosted Flakes?

What I mourn is that a game I used to be able to trust to be at least okay for a family activity is sliding down into one that I cannot.Moragauth wrote:I think Dungeon is fine. What upsets me is that I used to not have to mod a game in order to prevent sexual indecency.
And I would dearly love to ask them to develop such a feature that would put clothing on the creatures. I'm sure they'll get to it right after they get to male/female versions of the hero models.

If you are disgusted by the "exploitation" of *both* sexes, why did you only mention women in the first place? Were you discomforted when the concept art of the Titan was posted?
>Unfortunately, too many people make immature excuses for those >who use trashy ads on TV, in magazines & on the Internet … >whether male or female.
You have to realize that I did not say it is of good taste to use nudity as a tool of advertisement. I was merely stating that people (especially women) generally whine a LOT more about these things when the flesh of concern belongs to a female.
>I agree. Being a man (as opposed to an immature hedonist), I am >disgusted by this cheap and shameless mode of advertising.
Yeah, the use of nudity in advertisements can be extremely disgusting sometimes. Take Rain's (a Korean singer) recent concert poster for example. It looks quite repulsive and yet difficult not to look at because many store windows spam those posters (i.e. you see them everywhere in Asian communities). I discussed it with friends for a bit but they think it's just art. Oh well.

Your Frosted Flakes may even take the form of nude female figurines in that case. Imagine a dozen of f-cup flour-made ladies inside your mouth.

Fair enough. Personally I have no problem with the game's level of nudity and provocative art.

So never? Most game developers do include a feature disabling mature content in their games in order to mass-market them. It's funny that Nival hasn't.

Ummm....she was only agreeing with my comment. And I'm anything but a feminist. :O) I love women and I love looking at beautiful women, but what Nival did here is simply unnecessary. It's turning a labor of love that NWC worked on for years into cheap trash. The game itself is top-notch IMO (yes, I know I'm in the minority somewhat here) and it doesn't need crap like that to sell. Promote it properly on it's own merits and it'll succeed....or not. But going down this road is not advisable.ywhtptgtfo wrote:That's a typical feminist complaint. Now, look around. How often are images of half-naked men on advertisements? I'd say frequently. It doesnt surprise that a gaming magazine would put a picture like that on the cover, there's been small porno advertisement in pcgamer magazines before so its nothing new.
I like the decision to put something like that on the cover only because maybe when the parents that buy these magazines for their kids will finally realise that when they go to pick it off shelf, that the content isnt really suitable for kids.
Nudity in general doesnt bother me, what bothers me is when:
- its impractical, such as nude warriors
- blatent sexual advertising towards minors
- its in public, i dont wanna see ugly old codgers with so much as their shirt off when i go to the beach.

I don't know WHY Nival had to do this. I'm 19 and I like seeing scantily-clad models as much as the next guy... but that has a time and a place. Nival clearly misplaced their place. When game promotions become just another show of scantily-clad people (let's go in general...because there are scantily-clad men too), then I feel it cheapens the game greatly.Sir Charles wrote:Ummm....she was only agreeing with my comment. And...I don't mind the Dungeon faction at all, but it is kind of inappropiate for the kiddies (reminds me of the voodoo shaman in Master of Magic).

Well in the case of the Furies and Blade Dancers who use their speed as both weapon and armour, being lightly clad makes sense. As for the Matriarch, aside from her spikes and such, she could use magic shields.

I said that partly because her response started with "I agree. Being a woman[...]", which subtlely hinted it's a female thing. Again, my intention is not meant to directly berate her comment, but to note a tendency to associate these things with just women.

Heroes 5's a "great" game because it utilized much of Heroes 3's mechanics. On the same note, the not-so-great aspects of the game tend to be components that NWC's golden recipe does not apply... i.e. The Ashan cosmology, AI, cinematics, game balance, etc

It speaks volumes of the perversion this society lives in when people complain about sexually alluring semi-nakedness of persons in a fantasy strategy game because it would be inappropriate for kids when the game is all about killing something which of course is NOT inappropriate.
Isn't it strange that things that are meant to enrich the life of each person sooner or later are thought as "inappropriate" and even more than that, while things that society tries to ban, killing, violence and so on, are considered in order?
Can anyone remember kids or juveniles becoming a raping fit from having looked at some "indecent" content?
On the other hand, what about the violence and ego shooter discussion in connenction with the really heavy cases of juvenile violence?
Is someone really saying that semi-naked, scantily clad bodies no matter the sex are something a kid shouldn't see? Don't you ever go into a public bath?
Sex sells, sure, but why? Don't you think it sells rather BECAUSE society is still a long way from overcoming the Christian heritage of brandishing the alluring aspects of the body as devil's work.

Hmm no there is more than that. How many people actually still believe that? Just look around many girls have revealing outfits, they don't feel ashamed(I am not talking about extreme cases ) and I don't see many people male or female to berate them for that. Or say something when they are out of earshot.
Anyway let's not get into that, after all you probably don't mind about it. There is a fine line between looking appealing and provoking someone but also why you want to have this look. And especially the way it seems to be brandished in concept art and magazine(s) makes me think of it negatively. Not that I mind the least about their appearance in-game but the fact that they of all things are used for promotion...
