I played with Fortress recently, against my friends, and i noticed that with soldier's luck, my blackbear riders (who were in 3 stacks of 20 each) got their paw strike 100% of time. I mean, for the whole game, since i got the soldier's luck, they ALWAYS hit with paw strike. Was i lucky, or has this happened to you too? My hero was Brand, (imo, best fortress hero, although, i'm thinking about ebba, since i discovered this. Inga gets her random spells too rarely, and others just plain suck.) and i was playing on normal difficulty. Which brings me to the next question:
Why is everyone obsessed with playing heroic? I mean, sure, against PC, you HAVE to play heroic, just for the sake of having some fun, but MP, is just more fun on normal, or even easy, when you don't have to think about resources too much.
Ermm...something that i noticed.

What? It's more fun to think about resources, otherwise what's the point of having those mines? Or why we don't get free buildings then?but MP, is just more fun on normal, or even easy, when you don't have to think about resources too much.
But I agree, I don't play Heroic THAT much, more Hard (but definetely NOT Normal/Easy)
Hide, listen, watch, learn… And when the time is right, strike from the shadow.

I have been on the receiving end of a serious whooping because of this (only once. I'm more careful now)Magepunk wrote:I played with Fortress recently, against my friends, and i noticed that with soldier's luck, my blackbear riders (who were in 3 stacks of 20 each) got their paw strike 100% of time. I was defending a fortress, but didn't have a hero present. However, the bonus shieldguards I got from the building was about 1000 strong, so I thought I'd have no problems (as this gave me the advantage). Well, a stack of about 20 blackbears took out the entire stack by pawing them back-and-forth.
to visualize, here is a segment of the battlefield (code used to get fixed-width font):
Code: Select all
.11S.22.
.11..22.
The bears attack at 1, pushing the dwarves back to the right (and causing them to lose their initiative). The bears now move to 2 and attack, pushing the dwarves back to the original position, again losing their initiative. Lather, rinse, repeat until the whole stack is gone. Since the dwarves are never adjacent to the bears after the attack, they didn't even get their retaliation attack! Once the retaliation was spoiled by another stack, however, all the enemies could beat up on them, as long as they didn't get into the bears' way (since with no actions, they never get their retaliation back!)
Even one black bear can kill off an infinite number of creatures, as long as the other creature stack has a lower initiative. Without soldier's luck, then the paw strike won't always trigger, so you can't do this, but with soldier's luck, nothing slower stands a chance. Multiple stacks of bears can do this to multiple enemy stacks. Get an initiative boosting artifact to be able to fight faster enemies. Only a hero can break the cycle (either by killing the bears, or slowing them, or something similar.

That sounds like a serious bug error that should be fixed.
I thought that the bears were always paw swiping because they were charging across the whole battlefield and there is a greater chance with more squares moved.
If it works every time with only one square moved because of soldier's luck then it's too strong.

And in the example I showed, it takes 5 steps, so maybe that was enough for it to trigger continually. Against a large creature, it might need 6 or even 7 steps (which may be too far; I don't recall the speed of the bears off hand)PhoenixReborn wrote:I've been playing with it, and it does in fact have to do with distance covered.
When the bears were going over very short distance, 1 or 2 squares, even with soldier's luck the paw strike did not always trigger.

Ah, good info, your example didn't quite make sense to me because I thought there were multiple stacks of bears. And I guess there are no other creatures? But yeah, 5 steps is definitely within the always trigger threshold.Qurqirish Dragon wrote:And in the example I showed, it takes 5 steps, so maybe that was enough for it to trigger continually. I don't think being a large creature makes a difference (except considering retaliation) but I didn't actually check.
