BRAVO GravyLover! That was the most concise explaination I have ever heard.
My local forum has been talking about the fact that School Buses in our area are going to have video recorders monitoring the children from now on.
This is because of the escalating problem with violence between the children. I personally blame this on:
A- Parents being told that Spanking Damages the children. Hence, children grow up with ZERO respect for adults or authority. Children know darned well that the bus driver (or any other adult) cannot do anything to make them behave. The driver (or store clerk or person on the street) is not allowed to touch them or even to raise their voices to the children. Any adult who has NO reward or punishment system in place and get ZERO respect.
B- Violent cartoons that teach "Might is Right". I'm not saying that all violence should be cut out of children's programing. (They tried that in the 70's and even chopped out images of Willie Coyote going 'poof' at the bottom of the cliff. That does not work!) However, we are now dealing with entire generations of children who have cut their teeth on Power Rangers, Poke'mon and Yu-Gi-Oh! type shows that show the only way to end conflict is through physical violence. Even the older He-Man, Transformers and ThunderCats would TRY to find a peaceful resolution before beating the crap out of the 'bad guy'. Today, forget negotiations, just whip out your all powerful weapon of destruction (Zord, Pet or Card) and beat them into submission. No wonder kids don't know any better!
People constantly looked at my 16 year old son and told me "He's a space alien. He's a pod person. He's just not normal." And I would blink - Why? Because he is SMART, polite, well behaved and respectful of adults? Amazing. That USED to be the norm. Now people EXPECT kids to be running all over the place, loud, stupid, rude and just plain horrid. That's because no one ever swatted their back sides for being rude to an adult when they were 2 or 3 years old. You can't teach a child respet after they are grown.
I hope the American Tax Payers enjoy building prisons. Because that's the only thing most teens fear. They are only afraid of turning 18 and having to go to REAL jail instead of just Juvie hall. But then, they belive that THEY will never get caught because all teens are just SO much smarter than anyone over 30. Word!
Gees. I didn't start out the morning in the mood to rant and rave.

Actually, something a bit (but just a bit) odd happened when I first saw your new avatar. I felt a strong urge to watch batman-movies and so I've now watched Batman Begins (which was great)...I've thought about watching it for years but I never didThunderTitan wrote:Which one? I prefer the Cain girl, not being able to talk much is a big plus.
It was a rally good movie...except for Katie Holmes
I think spanking's alright. My parents did it and I learned to behave. Personally I think children get away with way too many things these days just because the parents are afraid of punishing their children

Bingo! And when Dr. Spock came out with "Spanking is Bad" he did NOT give a proper replacement punishment. The "Super Nanny" is FINNALLY showing parents everywhere that bad behavior MUST be punished. Even if you don't spank, there still must be a swift and consistant disaplinary action involved. (And sitting in the corner or on the 'Naughty' mat gets them SO ready for jail later on! - ok, just kidding on that one.)Personally I think children get away with way too many things these days just because the parents are afraid of punishing their children
Dr. Spock told parents to REASON with their children. That just doesn't WORK on 2 year olds. They only understand Pain and Lack of Comfort. You can pop them on the bottom or ignore them. Which actually causes more long lasting emotional issues? A quick swat? Or "Mommy didn't love me" issues? If your small child is reaching for the hot stove or picks up a sharp knife, which is more appropriate? A slap on the hand and "NO! That will hurt you very badly!" or "Sit on the naughty mat until you understand that stoves are hot and knives are sharp."
My mother was the MASTER of the quite, bruisless punishment. She would grab my arm and dig her fingernails as deeply into my tender flesh as possible while whispering in my ear, "Stop that. If you embarrass me (in church, in public) I will embarress YOU 10 times as badly." I knew damned well that ment that I would 'get my hide tanned' right in front of everyone.
Oh - I could go on for days.... but I prefer to go play a little Civ before work. TA.

My neighbours are fully and entirely responsible for me not liking children! They have a kid named Victor. He is never told 'no' or 'stop shouting/screaming', or 'don't spraypaint the neighbours dog' etc. He is allowed to do everything and they give him the most stupid toys. Example: Victor is extremely annoying to listen to as it is. Parents think: lets give the kid a freakin' whistle. Result: My mother and I are the ones who have to tell him what he can't do. It's not alright
He's a perfect example of bad parenting due to the parents not wanting to restrict their child.
Man, I hate that kid so much

I got paddled when I was really bad. Never a pleasant experience when your father lacks good hand-eye coordination. It sucked, but I was a pretty naughty kid and the paddlings, spankings, and groundings were justified. I think I'm better for it.
Maybe your neighbors just hate you Milla? Victor is just their means of showing it.

And the chickens. Those damn chickens.

See, now you're getting the pictureOmega_Destroyer wrote:Hmmm... Maybe Victor is just the spawn of some evil demon that used your neighbor as a surrogate?

Respecting someone based on age or social position = stupid.
Plenty of ppl that never saw cartoons were violent idiots when i was a kid too. The examples adults give them are way more important. A 2 or 3 year old will only insult an adult coz he saw another adult doing it. Beating him for it only makes him learn to be a hypocrite.Violent cartoons that teach "Might is Right".
Really? Doesn't show!BlueEyes wrote: My parents did it and I learned to behave.
