Karli all the way. First of all he starts with luck that is needed to boost the dwarves' damage. And he already has the ability soldier's luck that helps spearwielders and blackbear riders to activate their effects. I think it affects some runes too though I'm not perfectly sure.
Then he starts with a satisfying number of spearwielders and an ammo cart. Which means he can counter walkers with little losses as well as lesser tier ranged enemies and never run out of shots. No need to upg the defenders to creep, he's good to go.
In week 1 I build Up to bear rides(usually brawlers too) and citadel. On week 2 I upg the bears on day 1 and since their specials and the spearwielders' are hp based Karli has a killer disruptive army. If I can fit a runeguild in week 1 I may be lucky enough to get rune of charge but the brawlers usually suck up my mercury deposits and there's only so much you can build in 7 days.
Since I already have luck I get defence(not up to preparation) and destructive the abilities of which I stall taking before week 3 where I build my guild. Light magic is a welcome addition as is attack for later.
I used to get warmachines but triple ballista requires 6 lvls and I believe I can get more with other choices. Luck and warmachines are not enough and are best for rushes, not bigger maps.

I, for one, am dying to find out what colour they paint Michael's toenails.

Karli or Inga are probably the best (starting skillwise). Though Inga starts out great (never really have to go to town for your runes) once she learns them all, she really looses her only advantage. So Karli deffinately has an advantage. Now I would normally say rune priest or bear rider hero, but their skills leave something lacking. I guess the one that starts with light magic won't be too awful bad (eternal light does rule) but I prefer destruction with them, and it is best to stick to one magic school for them. If you can bring yourself to do 2 schools, not a bad thing at all though.
Warning, may cause confusion, blindness, raising of eybrows, and insanity.

Helmar gets my vote. At high levels, you get a free mass cast of RM for every time you cast mass Haste or Deflect Arrow and this Faction needs all the Attack it can get.
The Spearwielder Hero is only good for starting with Soldier's Luck as Spearthrowers will never do much damage and it is pretty much the same with the Bear Rider.
None of the Rune Heroes are all that special.
I like the Priest Hero for his special but I hate his starting skill of Sorcery which forces the player to use Destructive magic.
The Defender Hero isn't that bad but you have to get the +1 damage Artifact.
I think Light magic with Luck is greater than Sorcery and Destructive, especially if you use the Rune of Berserking a lot.
