The term Goth is sometimes misunderstood. It pretty much means that you don't fit in to any 'nomal' category. Some see it as a philosophy more then outword appearence, others see it as a lifestyle (including the outward appearence). I dress in the Gothic style, but am not a true goth per se.

A true goth does not conform to anybody's expectation, and just lives their life how they see fit. They have a darker outlook on life, but more then a few don't wear the all black or anything else you may have heard. While I live a different lifestyle then most my outlook is not as dark as what most people see a Goth as. As for the second goth type (those that dress as well as have the Goth outlook) they fall into many category's also, but that is another matter. Even though this subject may be a bit boring to some let me delve a bit into it.

Goth style is dark and turbulant. Black, red (more blood color then any other type of red) and silver are common goth style. Some add chains and peircings, but trust me that is not 'mandatory'. I advise you to stay away from black lipstick unless you know what you are doing, and black fingernail polish can be ok, but red (blood red) is much more interesting imho. Unlike most people believe goths do have a sense of humor, but it is a bit darker then your typical humor. Some are sarcastic, but again that is a matter of taste.

True goths do not try to fit in by dressing, acting, or doing certain things. Those of us who like the lifestyle and fashion (goths) realize this, and though we may dress with certain style we respect the others that don't. True goths are about non-conforming, so most of the Goths you can tell by looking at them are considered 'wannabes' (like myself hehe). I know that word is used as a negative alot, but then again I don't much care how people see me (which is in true goth style).

Also this is just my view on things, and some people have different deffinitions. I am all about respecting peoples opinons. One thing I don't want (nor will I) to do is get in a debate about what a Goth is or is not. There is no right deffinition (as far as I can tell) for one goth can be totally different from another.

*snicker*

"Goth" is a subculture that likes to dress all in black, frequently are into vampires or pagen religions (if any). They tend to like rather depressing alternative music. The running joke is that "On a good day, a Goth looks like they are on their way to a funeral." ... I went hunting around, but I can't seem to locate the picture of the kid in the bathroom labled "I'm so Goth, I fart bats."

Anyway - a couple of years ago, I saw a T-Shirt that said "I'm your Fairy Goth Mother." I just thought that was such a funny conscept that I ran with it. I had this truely beautiful silvery grey fabric and some shiny black stuff left over from a custom order job. I also had some black spider web lace and black stretch mesh. I found this killer trim that was black with small silver rectangles on it that looked like zippers. I through them all together with some beaded trim that looked like black flowers and frosted white daggers. I've got some HUGE fairy wings and painted them black with clear glitter dusted on before the paint dryed. I've also been hacking two wigs together ... but I'm just not happy with the hair yet. Now, asside from the fact that it IS rather shinny, it's pretty cool. I even begged a pair of old black army boots from a friend to ad a good 'finishing touch.'

The friend that gave me the boots suggested that I come out and say "Three wishes? Go Frell yourself." Smirk and leave. Another added "Oh wait, that's all you ever do anyway." But I'm not exactly sure that's what I want to do.

See, I'm a costumer. I like the CONSEPT ... but I'm not far enough 'into' the Goth Culture to poke fun at them in a way that makes sence. The simple fact that Goths tend to enjoy being miserable, makes joking around with them or about them rather difficult.

OH! Here - I found a picture of the costume "in progress". NOT a flattering shot of me or the costume - but at least you get the idea. This had been a VERY long day and I was just going to wear the unfinished outfit as a "Hall Costume" so I left off the wings and the hoop slip. I was also rather ticked off at myself for leaving my make up guide at home and for the life of me, couldn't remember what it was I wanted to do. (I found a magazine pic with a modified "Alice Cooper" look that I wanted to try. I'll do better next time.)

If you can pull it off sarcastic replies like "Oh yeah, that will be a good wish." or "I'll get right on that." would go far. And teasing remarks like ... "You know you'd look good as a toad." Sarcastic would be a way to go for the GFG imo. I am not good at suggesting more common ways of doing things (my world view is a lot different then others). Hope this helps some Scarlett. Oh and your statement about goth is one of the reasons I don't consider myself a 'true' goth. Though I get depressed a lot and am moody, I most of the time have a positive outlook. For some reason though, everybody insists I am a Goth. *Shrugs* well all that matters is what you think of yourself, why should you care what others think about you? :)

They do not have a single style. "Am I a true goth?" is a question mainly rised by teenagers in identity crisis. You know, teenagers always wish to have something special or very different from their mom and dad style. People in black, grotesque, kind of sad-violent look is in their opinion a cool and scary way to go. But they are not sure whether there is anything else than outfit and music thus the questions about "typical true goth".
And trust me, when you go to a goth forum, most members there commonly wear blue jeans and not black leather.

BINGO! That's why I have a problem identifying with the current version of "Goths". I'm going through my own mid-life crisis, my "Who Am I?" questions are far different from those of the teen-twenty "Kids in Black".

I'm truely likeing the "Three wishes? I'll get right on that." Thanks! Very helpful.

See, I was never Goth, I was a Punk. I was into the tight, dark jeans, puffy white shirt and studded belts, braclets and dog collars. But that was a long time ago, in a place far away, with first hubby. There aren't many pictures from that time because we were so poor we only had a cheep camera and couldn't afford film or developing.

With current (2nd) hubby, we went 'Cyber Punk' as costumes to pay homage to our own rebelious natures. This is my FAVE pic of me and my other half. I only wish it had been a better quality camera and film.

There's a popular comic here in Norway revolving around a goth girl named Nemi. I'll see if I can get some inspiration from that, shall I?

And yet you had money for those freaky clothes and haircut... and whatever that robot arm thingy is.

Cause black leather is a rocker/punk thing.

That is an interesting pic ScarlettP.

Yeah, black leather has been fairly absorbed by the rocker/punk culture. People think I'm punk because I wear two black leather bracelets. The Converse All-Stars probably don't help things either.
And the chickens. Those damn chickens.

I still maintain that all deviants have green blood. Them and zombies, coz we all know that iron is so unnecesarry in blood.

What's with all the alt lifestyle crap, as if everyone else manages that part of their life the same way. Damn political correctness. Pissing me off since i can recall

And why does it matter so much what color the liquid that comes out once you trample them is?! Do they really consider kids dumb enough not to know that's supposed to be blood?

There, i feel marginaly better. Stupid life, just when you're about to give up it shows you a bone and dangles it over you just where you can't reach it. God i love it's sense of humor.

Things are going to be a bit more quiet arround here (and a bit more boring imo :)). So on a totally random topic if you could spend 24 hrs anywhere/time/ect where would it be? For instace you could say the moon (having enough air and such to last the 24 hrs).

Me personally it would be some midevil castle during a costume ball.

V, Thanks for the link!

FYI - FIRST husband and I were the true Punkers. And starving artists... But we didn't break up over the money. I left him because he was 'doing' all my girlfriends while loudly and abusively accusing me of sleeping with every man I spoke to.

The pic is of me and SECOND husband, a few years after my divorce from the @$$hole. We were considerably better off, but I still had punk in my blood. We did the CyberPunk costumes for the 1989 World Science Fiction Convention in New Orleans. Ahhh... those were the good old days.

----------

If I could spend 24 hours anywhere, I might just choose New Orleans the way it was then. SO much fun!

As for now... I'm torn on that one. Either Austraila because I want to see the outback or maybe Italy or Greece because I want to see the ancient ruins. Funny, I want to see OZ because it is still wild and untamed... but I also want to see the cradle of civilization. I would say Egypt, but one of my best friends spent a great deal of time in Cyro and said that I wouldn't like it.

I'd go somewhere with mountains. Doesn't matter where so long as I could do some hiking.
