Best endgame race
Best endgame race
Hi everyone. I've played HoMM I-III; but haven't for a while. Saw Heroes IV, didn't like it; got busy with real life, but I just got Heroes V and I'm glad I'm back.
My question is; which race do you think would suit me best?
I liked..... Warlock(?) (Black dragon guy) in I and II, I think Necro in III.
I play single player only, usually the largest size map. I like a nice, long game that ends up with me having a bunch of heroes running around, lots of towns, etc.
I guess the real question is - which race has the best endgame, lol.
Thanks for any pointers.

Welcome to the forums, Hel!
Well, my favorite race is Sylvan (their Hunters rock! , but then again, I love Elves). In the end, you should play every race and see which one fits your playing style (especially since H5 deemphasized level 7 units; they are weaker now, and somewhat easier to kill...especially with strong heroes).
Hope this helps!

Well Necros are scary endgame, Sylvan (while I do like them a lot) suffer end game a little. Academy (if you can get them to end game) are really tough. Dunegeon is ok, but their spells start lacking punch late late game (even empowered ones). Inferno (especially if you have quick gating) can be a pain in the rear end game. Perhaps the worse though is Necropolipse (though I dislike them their skel archer growth is just insane). A good Necro will have 10k+ skel by end game, and no other town can keep up. Now this is only on higher difficulties (so they can recruit more).
I would rank them in this order (personally).
Top =Necropolipse - lots and lots of growth, few losses (raise dead). Early game they are a bit harder however, so keep this in mind.
2nd = Academy - Mini-artifacts are killer when you can afford them, and you suffer few losses also once your spells are up to snuff. Neutrals just lay down and die for you end game. Early game they are the hardest to use.
3rd = Sylvan - Imbue Arrow - rain of arrows - and lots of Master Hunters make this a force to be reconed with. Not too hard early game, but not as easy early game as Haven. Also has only a few weak links (like dancers), less weak links then many towns.
Now the rest are really dependant. Haven can be a killer any time, but late game start to suffer. Dungeon is a little tougher early game, but mid and early late game are monsters. Inferno starts slow, but late game their gating and skills can be tough to go against.
Still not enough known about dwarves to place them, but they seem a solid force from beginning to end game.

I personally Love the Dungeon late game. Here is why.
1. Blood Furies!!! Everyone says that they suck late game, but they are great for pulling an attack off of your true core units and they still pack a whollop especially since they usually go first or second.
2. Destructive magic is a great spell school for Warlocks with their huge spell power, some of the perks help with initiative issues or with - Defense for high Def heroes and critters. Its sheer damage output seems lessened in the Endgame on huge maps but keep in mind that a 1000 damage Meteor Shower that gets Lucky and Empowered is a game winning shot
3. Grim Raiders are nutty with several units assisting they can really mess up an opponent.
4. Minotaurs are awesome when upgraded with the two attacks and synergize with the Raiders perfectly, they are slow in speed and initiative so good planning on the location and movement is required.
5. Shadow Matriarchs hit pretty hard and have some great spells to cast and they are faster than the average shooter.
6. Black Dragons... still the nastiest 7th level troop.
7. Elemental chains is awe inspiring in the late game with a damage potential of 25% with the Elemental chains boosting building and expert Irrisitable Magic. And it heps with your heroes spells as well.
8. Assassins are great for softening up weaker shooter units in big battles and tend to get ignored because their up front damage potential is low, however with 3 critters getting poisoned they start racking up the damage.
9. The overall speed and initiative of the Dungeon is only rivaled by the Sylvan castle, most of the critters are very fast and act often. With a fast hard hitting army and a very hard hitting hero you can quickly overwhelm an enemy hero by killing or seriously hurting 1-2 key stacks early in the battle.
Anyhow the Dungeon is a blast to play for me. First and foremost find a castle that plays well for your play style.

No not everybody thinks Furies are bad end game. They are always something to worry about. Dungeon is a dangerous town, I have to agree, and my above list is just opinons. Never count out any town if controlled by an experienced player.

well, I have tested all six races on issles of terra, hot seat against myself(hehe) and I figure out, that there are only 2 factions that pwn everything - necropolis and inferno.
After that it's a tought fight and winner is only who attacks right
However, inferno has hard time without artifacts, since confusing skelets is a must, but however, if skelets are in corner, only 1 large creature can be there, and there's problem since only lvl 5+ can take hit from skelets.
Also, in endgame, only necropolis with mark of the necromancy can counter 1,2K + familiar mana steal, all other heroes are then out of mana, what is nasty.

I can only rank those where I'm sure where they go:
1. HAVEN - this race has to take top spot. The longer the game lasts, the more Marksmen / Paladins Haven will acquire. The numbers can get really really impossible to handle. Edges out Necropolis because of Skeleton Archer's fragility.
2. NECROPOLIS - as above, but with Skeleton Archers instead.
3. ACADEMY - for reasons already mentioned, and artificier.
4. DUNGEON - Dungeon's probably the weakest race as the game goes on. The might-aligned races gain in strength just as Dungeon's high-damage spells and high-power Phoenixes go down. If anyone says Dungeon rules late-game, then consider Dungeon's creatures alone against any of the other races' creatures alone. It doesn't work out; Dungeon generally loses. Dungeon's 8th unit is the hero, and as the hero's direct capabilities go down, so does Dungeon.
The other two races, Sylvan and Inferno, I'm not sure where to put them. Both are probably better than Academy, unless I'm underestimating the power of Artificier. Sylvan stronger or Inferno? I'm not so sure on this one. As the game goes on Sylvan initiative gets really devastating, inflicting huge casualties while incurring none by sheer speed. But Inferno would be able to Gate increasingly large numbers of creatures as well. Sylvan or Inferno? I'm not sure. That's why I didn't rank them.
EDIT: Before anyone starts crticizing why I ranked Dungeon last, hear me out. These rankings are for really really late-game when every side has enormous armies (eg. 80 Archangels). At this point direct damage really loses its power. Nival's done a great job by delaying the decline of direct damage compared to Heroes 3, but it doesn't hide the fact that the decline is there. If the game lasts for 3 years game-time, Dungeon gets increasingly weak as the might-factions especially get increasingly strong.

I don't think the problem is rightly put here.. I mean more importantly is getting there than being strong in end-game. What difference does it make if a hero in month 6 at level 30 can beat pretty much everything if he gets owned in month 1 by a guy with strong first aid, or ballista...
The better question is surely, wich is the most versatile race of them all... but this is what the mods are trying to balance... make all races evolve in a balanced way...
Still there might be races that are more verasatile than others but it may depend on the skill of each player...

But on an extra large map like 'Four Kingdoms' (fan map) it is impossible to have any kind of decisive battle within 1 month. By the time I got out of my starting area I had many black dragons...okrane wrote:I don't think the problem is rightly put here.. To Banedon, while I won't say that Dungeon is the strongest, I will say to not underestimate the power of the altar of elements...the damage adds up.
If I had to pick I'd probably pick Fortress and if you don't have the expansion I'd pick Necro.
First, thanks everyone for your input; I definately have a direction now.okrane wrote:I don't think the problem is rightly put here.. Okrane, I see your point, but due to real life issues, I'll never play against another player, and I've never had problems with the computer's AI squishing me in month one. Not on the hugest maps out there. I hope anyway, lol.

evey faction is good as long as you know how to use it. One time I fought someone who had Necropolis and I was Academy (My Favorite since HIII ). I had 50 Titans (long game...) and when I fought his main hero, he had about 2k skel archers!!! so I finished it, and then asked him what was his stratagy, and he said that he always goes for the gold in chests, picks necromancery last, and after that abilities (he had 3k skellies...)
