No chance. If you have the money you can bid bid bid!

The better general rule of thumb is to make quality bids so that the opposing bidder has to come back over the top with more than either you or they are willing to spend. Small raises just stretch out the process. If I see a Robe of the Gaurdian come out you can bet my opening bid will be 20,000!

Figure out your max and bus 20-25% under that. There are enough other players who will value like you do so you won't be the top bid unless you go overboard.
