Master of Magic, the other Ultima games, the first two Elder Scrolls, the old Gold Box D&D games, the list could go on and on...

How is Age of Empires a fantasy game?

Nice list. But Total War, Stronghold and Settlers are not fantasy. (yes and Age of Empires too)

Also try these:
Arcanum
HoMM 2-4
Planescape: Torment
Vampire - The Masquerade Bloodlines

*shrugs* I'd say Fantasy is hard to really define. Different for everyone. Personally I don't consider Harry Potter and the such part, because of the timeframe.

As soon as priests have magical powers of healing and the such, that's enough to make it fit in the fantasy world for me. AoE did this, but even when it doesn't (like Stronghold) the timeframe/medieval setting is enough for me.

Don't really know why, but arcanum didn't do much for me. Maybe the guns. Will try to get my hands on the M&M series. Few friends have the games, should be able to borrow.

Fantasy need to have something FANTASTIC in it. The timeframe matters not.

I understand what makes you say that and I suppose I have been lacks in my definition of the games I like to play. I'd like to think all of these worlds could be molded together. Without anything feeling truly out of place. The prehistoric setting of early AOE doesn't fully compute with TLOTR, but they do not deny each other. I'm just a fan of the entire medieval/fantasy setting. And that's the kind of games I'm looking for mostly.

Anyone here played Disciples 1?

I wouldn't call it awfull, but it wasn't very pleasing.

And AoE only has one prehistoric age as i recall.

If you're looking for a better word maybe Historical could work.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historical_fiction
Fantasy is a genre of art that uses magic and other supernatural forms as a primary element of plot, theme, or setting.

nice tLD

ahhh the old Ultima Underworld games, they bring back some memories, as do quite a few titles in that list, good taste in games Shadowbane, except you really need to try the earlier HoMM games!

You would consider the Hurricane-Summoning Prophet or the Nano Age Robots not fantasy? Let alone the age which I've seen only in EE: Space Age!!

Wizardry series. Betrayal at Krondor. Bard's Tale.

:D There aren't nearly enough fans. My top 5 games would definitely have the 2 UW's in it. Got it to run well on a dos partition now.

Except the Prophet they're SF, not Fantasy Fiction.
