Which game from the Heroes Series to play next?

Unread postby vepeli » 16 Feb 2006, 21:23

Helloo Adventurers!
Glunk..!

I list this post here so You Adventurers can recommend me of which Heroes game I should play next. I have completed
King's Bounty, Heroes I, Heroes III and just recently finished H3 Armageddon's Blade. I myself are thinking of Heroes II, but not sure yet.
What do You think?

Yours truly,
Vepeli who possess both Might and Magic in computer games

I would definitely recommend Heroes II. In my opinion it is the pinacle of the series. It, like HOMM1, has distinct advantages and disadvantages for each town. HOMM3 had very similar towns and every could be (needed to be) upgraded. In HOMM2, only certain creatures have upgrades, so you don't have to spend as much time "managing" your builds.

Also, the campaign is a lot of fun from both sides and offers several uniqe maps, and executive decisions that can change the entire campaigns.

Go ahead and load up HOMM2 and the upgrade and have at it!

For me, the natural step from H3 would be H4. It's quite different, and with all the things that have happened to it (expansions, mods, maps, campaigns, oh my!), it's actually a great game.
In War: Resolution, In Defeat: Defiance, In Victory: Magnanimity, In Peace: Goodwill.

I assume you'll eventually play them all? Either H2 or H4 would be good choices. I enjoyed all incarnations of Heroes, but I find H2 to be the hardest. I'm not sure what it is about it that makes it hard, but I lose a lot more often when I load that one up than any of the others. A lot changed with H4, but I still enjoyed the game.

H2 would probably be below standards for you now in terms of options in play.

So I'd say either H3 Shadow of Death, the H3 Wake of Gods mod, or H4.

Probably H3 SoD first; that has long interconnected and fun campaigns.

H2 is the best, for sure. But, if you play "backwards", you will probably notice the few missing options from before (primarily the lack of a wait option (only defend) and the rather illogical inventory-setup) and that may mar your experience of the many features in H2 superior to those of the other games.

On the other hand, you've already played Kings Bounty and H1, so it shouldn't be a problem. So, play H2 :)

Like several others, I highly recommend Heroes II. It's definitely the best game of the series.

Gold is a lot more scarce in H2 than in H3. Also, the AI plays a bit differently: I think it cheats more and plays less like a human. It seems more interested in ruining your day than actually winning the game.

Go for H2 now, before your standards go too high. :p ;)

Meanwhile you take a break from H3, where you can come back afterwards for Shadow of Death.

After that it's your choice: Wake of Gods or H4. But we'll see about that later. ;)

If you really liked H3, you should download and install WoG.

But as others have mentioned, H2 is simply the best. It might not be the flashiest and it might be missing some features that made gameplay a little less frustrating that were included in later versions, but you're doing yourself a disservice if you're a heroes fan and you've never played H2.

Also, the user made maps for H2 are better than those for any other version, IMO... well, more accurately put, there are more of them.

Well I think you have to have SoD before downloading WoG so it's not an option. The SoD expansion wasn't as good as the AB expansion but it's still worth picking up.

Well, the guy seems to be playing campaigns mostly, and from this pov, the SoD campaigns are anyway better than the WoG ones. WoG is great, but only of H3 core fans, that kinda got bored after playing all campaings and scenarios, and need sth else.

Yeah the SoD campaign isn't bad... but the H2 campaigns are much better. Some of them are very difficult.

That makes sense. Now that I think about it, I think most of my problems in that game have been with the AI. I haven't played in a while, though.

You might also check out the Heroes II strategy guide on the CH main site. It deals primarily with playing against the computer.

Definitely go with HoMM II. It is in my (highly subjective :-D) opinion the best game ever made, and thus also the best in the series. Afterwards go with the Shadow of Death expansion, and then H4, though you could also try out WoG, but I'm not too fond of it.

Don't go with h2. That would be a huge step backward; actually, I don't think it's playable after h3. Even that game (h3) is simply better on every aspect, it is clearly an improved version of h2. Simply bigger.

Now considering that h4 is also a huge step forwards from h3; I'd certainly recommend it. If you only play against the AI, however, I recommend you patch up the game as you can and download maps.

Seeing as many others seems inclined to disagree with this, I'd say it's best to try H2 and make up your own mind (I for one thinks H3 takes away more than it adds in terms of quality).
