Restarting Heroes 3

Unread postby Darkzephyr » 27 Nov 2007, 22:17

Hey Everyone. I just recently installed HOMM3:ROE and I'm relearn how this game is played. Last time I played was in 2000-2001, so I know I've got some catching up to do, both in terms of strategy and expansions.

So aside from getting Heroes Complete, I would like to know what else I need to do to start learning tactics and playing competetive online games.

I've been to HeroesCommunity Forums, but most of the forums/tactics there seem a bit random, and I have no idea what they're talking about in some cases.

So I have a few questions.

1. Where can I find a good/organized strategy guide for begginers/intermediate players?
I know some basic strategies, like using fast units on your scouts, and having units "chain" new recruits to your hero so he doesn't have to return to town.
2. What's the Best way to find people to play with? I have Gamespy, but are there any other ways to find people to play with? And hopefully people to reteach me how to play?
3. What are some of the changes made to Homm3 since the expansion? I know they added Conflux, changed Lizardmen, Serpentflies and Angels...but how? Did they make them more or less powerful?

Anything else you can do to help me start playing competetively would be awesome!

IF you want to play/mentor me. My MSN address and IM is BBoehler26@yahoo.com!

I'm afraid that here's so much changes. It's hard to spoke about them one by one. So just to your questions. - Lizard Warriors were boosted now are formidable unit :-D , Dragon Fly is getting Dispel+Weakness, this is a must be. Archangels cost additional 3 gems.

Sorry I think that here are some guides, try to look at JJ strategies, as to the others, well I don't know them from head.

Tactics for RoE and Complete are slightly different, many changes were made so that's why. Happy seeking the Truth ;) Yup, you may also browse a bit our HeroesI-IV subsection.

Those guides can really help you. Also if you've played other games in the series, you can try the evolution topics. Or you can read trough the 'Best lvl X creature' topics. And over everything I'm sure here are a hole lot of guys who can answer your questions about every HoMM.

When you say "those" guides, are you refering to the ones I mentioned from HeroesCommunity Site?
I agree they can help me, but the main tactics one is mostly a random bits of tactics for different towns, some which I don't play that much. Also, some of the tips are more advanced and only apply to certain situations or certain maps that I haven't yet encountered.
I was looking at the Best X Creature threads, and those are nice because I can learn a lot about individual creature strengths and weakness.

But I'm also looking for more common knowledge that people may "assume" everyone knows, but I don't since I've only played 1 or 2 games since reinstalling it.
Here are some specific examples of questions I have.
1. What's best to build the first day/week in your town..Town Hall, Unit building, Mage guild?? What situations can change that? Or anything relating to different build orders for different towns in general
2. What secondary abilities lead to other abilities? Like if I want to get X ability, do I need to take Y ability first?
3. Should I always take gold from treasure chests for the first week?
4. Different army formations and different strategies.

So instead of reading 100's of tidbits to only find a few tips that I can actually understand and tips that are good for towns/situations I find myself playing...I was hoping for something a bit more organized and something that starts with the basics and builds upon them.

Btw, I like the JJ strategy!! It's one of the best I've encountered so far.

I was referring at JJ's guides. Though I know there are lot to read, but I'm sure there are also a lot of answers.

That's different for difficulty lvls and also maps can influence these.
If you want common answers, those can be find in JJ's guide. And I think there is a thread somewhere with 'what to build in first week' or like that.
Darkzephyr wrote: 2. What secondary abilities lead to other abilities? Like if I want to get X ability, do I need to take Y ability first?
There's no such relation between them. But there are some restrictions, like some Hero classes cannot normally (lvl up or Univesities) learn some skills. About these restriction you can read in JJ's guide.
Darkzephyr wrote: 3. Should I always take gold from treasure chests for the first week?
I say that you should take gold from treasurechest in the first week only on impossible and maybe on very hard (depends on map)
Darkzephyr wrote: 4. Different army formations and different strategies.
There can be so many that some specifications wouldn't hurt.

H3 is a very complex game, and even for a specific situation there can be many solutions.
So don't really hope that you read 10 guides and you become expert. The furthermost advice of mine is one word: Exercize!
