Graphic Card & TotE

Unread postby maltz » 04 Nov 2007, 02:04

Hello:
I just bought a so-so new system that has a built in graphic card.

CPU:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ 2.4GHz, 512Kb x 2 L2 Cache, 2000MHz HT

Motherboard:
Asus M2A-VM Socket AM2 AMD690G + ATI SB600 Chipset, Integrated ATI X1250 <---

RAM: 2GB DDR2 667

OP: Vista 64bit

When I run TotE it is quite disappointing.
While on another PC I have the 4800+ CPU with a ~$130 graphic card, same RAM, but Windows XP. Everything ran perfect there.

I wonder whether the graphic card really made a big difference? Or it is VISTA? Would it be wise to just buy a graphic card to put on this motherboard, or just get another system that does not have a built-in VGA and buy a graphic card? Should I go for win XP? Thanks.

Greetings, to aswer your question - yes, it does. Intergrated graphic cards are usually 1 generetion behind latest versions of "normal" cards and are usually slower versions of their "big sisters". 100-150$ video card can make a huge difference when playing games or working with video - compared to intergraded v. cards.

+ I don't believe ( talking graphics ) that having Vista or XPs makes difference in this game - it's platform is too old for that .

All right, thanks. So if I buy a graphic card, is it going to waste my built-in older graphic card, or they can "work together"? If they can't work together I'll just return the system and get another one that does not have an integrated graphic card. Thanks.

They don't work together. You'd be hooking the monitor to the new one...Couldn't you switch the card over from the old machine?

There are a few things going on:

1. Integrated video cards often are pretty bad. You can often see huge improvements in performace with a 130$ add-in card compared to an integrated video card.

2. Many games have much better performance under Win XP compared to Win Vista. I doubt that the video card that you mentioned REALLY has well optimized Vista drivers ....

3. I think that video card [in a month or so] will be a couple of generations old. In addition when that card was new it was still a fairly slow card even then. Honestly I think that it might be fine to see the Vista 3D interface but I wouldn't play games with it.

If the game is playable you might want to put up with what you're seeing for a month or two and then look at possible video card upgrades. [A month or two will likely be a good time for upgraders IMHO ...]

Goodness may just buy a new card. You got new machine, it most definitely has PCI-E slot and you can get a great card for 150$ these days.

200$ will get you an 8800GT which will serve you for 3 more years from now.

How i hate integrated stuff!

Another issue may be the fact you are running Vista 64-bit. Several people have run most of the 32 bit version without significant problems. It is true that XP has even less trouble.

I just got a $110 graphics card (ATI x2600) and everything works well now. Thanks for the inputs.

Talking about graphic cards... anyone have any idea why i'm getting an annoying msg that my card isn't receiving enough power and has to be put on lower setting?! t first i thought that putting in the new DVD drive was too much for my source, but i took it out and i still get that msg when i play games.

Some power supplies are not strong enough for the latest video adapters, and it's sometimes a bit tricky to get that information. I'm stuck with a Radeon 9800 on my old Dell because my power supply cannot handle anything newer.

Oh, and regarding integrated cards, I get a smoother performance with my old Radeon on an old PC than with my brand new desktop at work because of its sucky integrated card.

Does the card have a secondary power connector? Maybe when you plugged in the DVD's power the other connector came loose or [as others have said] maybe your power supply can't supply enough juice on that specific rail?

Not to my knowledge... could it have just remained at lower settings from then?!

Could the source finally be going to heck?! It's over 5 years old and i already had to do some maintenance on it a year or so ago.

The funny thing is that TotE is working fine(better then H5 vanilla did), and so are the other games.

I have Vista and I think its part of my graphics problem when I play the game. However I was thinking about getting a new videocard. Except I have a laptop and have always in the past had desktops. Is it possible to get a videocard for a laptop? I have a dell insiprion 1405. Thanks guys.

vista kinda sucks i had vista crash on me more than 10 times, considering i juz got vista on my mac for like a month? i dont know if its the boot camp driver (the stuff that allows me to dual boot) is malfunctioning or vista needs more fixes and for integrated graphics? i hate it! the performance figures are disgusting!

I'm pretty sure that Vista isn't just stable enough. When it'll have at least one SP, it will be quite usable. But till then I stay with XP
