MM7 - Two Handed swords: useless ?

Unread postby UndeadHalfOrc » 16 Mar 2007, 15:52

Has anyone ever found a use for 2-handed swords in MM7? (excepting Artifacts)

WIth Master sword, Dual 1-handed swords of similar quality outdamage them in every way,
Every other 2-handed weapon type (except staff) can get their damage boosted with skill level, which are available to every class able to use a sword...

Heck, even expert level dual dagger easily outdamages a Two-Handed sword...

Discuss?

( Someone on the "free erathia" website tavern suggested that they are a remnant of MM6 (in which they had more use due to dual 1-handed swords being slower))-

The only 2-handed weapons worth using (IMO) are Zokarr's Axe (for a Ranger) and Iron Feather, but both of those are artifacts.

Iron Feather & Zokarr's Axe are wonderful weapons; I actually perfer Iron Feather to using two swords.

Amuck (Relic: Axe … Might +100, Endurance +100 Armor Class -15) is a really great weapon too. What with enhancing your Might & Endurance at +100 with only a -15 to Armor Class penalty! :-D Besides, there's a well in Tatalia (up the hill) which gives +20 to Armor Class to make up the difference.

Actually, Zokarr's Axe is NOT an artifact or relic - it's what I call a "named" item - NOT random like artifacts/relics and relics since you can get them 100% of the time, every game, at the same spot, and cannot be sold in shops. Same goes for Arcomage quest rewards, and Light/Dark cloaks you get from sun/moon clerics, Grognard's Cutlass, Lieutenant's Cutlass, Villain's Blade, and "The Minotaur's Axe" (which is different from a generic Minotaur axe).

That means you can build an Earth ranger / Earth Archer from the start of the game, knowing he'll be able to equip Zokarr's axe a bit later.

BTW The strongest weapon in the entire game is Charele - a spear. I've never gotten it though, it seems to be quite a rare drop.

Yes, they are useless

Natural sword progression suggests that using two one-handed swords is the way to go. Even before you reach this point using sword and shield is a better combination than any two-handed blade.

Well, i never used them in ANY rpg where you can choose your weapon. If you can have 2 normal sword syou can just outdamage ANY 2 handed sword. Mace gets damage with master skill just like poleaxes. So 2 handed swords are useless in my opinion...

I never use two-handed swords in M&M games, same goes for axes, except those rare times I had a minotaur character in MM8.

In BG2 and Icewind Dale 2 at least, 2-handed weapons are very effective. Morrowind and Oblivion doesn't even have dual-wielding (and the two-handed weapons are pretty good in those). I can name many rpgs where using two-handed weapons pays off.
"Yes, but what about David Beckham and the magic mushroom?"

I'm baaaaaack!

Well, i never used it in Morrowind either. One strike with a 2handed-sword takes so long you can olmost hit someone with a dagger for 3 times, if you have a good special one you can kill anything with it. Training 2 handed weapons takes forever too...

Exception

Unread postby CoffeeGnome » 24 Oct 2007, 15:54

I have found an exception to the two-handed sword being useless rule and that is in both MM6 and MM7 where archers are not allowed to use shields. In this one case until they have actually achieved master level in swords, they are better off using a two-handed weapon as oppose to a single weapon and having the other hand not being used for anything. This seem to be the only exception that I can find in either game where a two-handed weapon is better than two weapons or a weapon and a shield combination.

In M&M 7, it would be a far better idea to use a spear.

You have a point

Unread postby CoffeeGnome » 24 Oct 2007, 18:13

You have a point but I was just trying to find some instance in which a two-handed sword would give a better advantage than a single-handed sword. After all there are not that many.

I just finished MM8.

Two handeds were useful for my vampire and dark elf for a while before they learned Master Sword. After that, Two handeds went straight to my "TO SELL" item space. That means I never got to use those late game, top of the line two handed swords in any MM7 or MM8 game.

I was thinking at some point of making a true Armsmaster Knight in MM7 or MM8 - a Knight that would not invest a single point in any weapon skill and dump EVERY single of those points to Armsmaster instead - being just as good no matter what weapon he used. In that case, that knight could do well with late game, top of the line 2-H swords because they tend to match spears and 2-H axes in power and the only reason you don't see them used normally is because you don't get a +X to damage such as you get with axes and spears.

In MM7, that Knight could be a Goblin who plans from the start to use the Elf Slayer sword (arcomage reward), the most powerful non-artifact weapon in the game.

As for MM6.... well don't use Knights/Paladins/Archers, period! MM6 doesn't have the awesome Armsmaster or Plate/Chain armor damage reduction, Clerics/Druids/Sorcs kick just as much butt physically than Knights. So 2-Handeds are useless in MM6 as well... actually, all Swords/Axes/Spears/Staves are useless in MM6. The only weapons that you should ever need are Maces, Daggers and Bows.
