Guild Wars?
Guild Wars?
I'm thinking of playing Guild Wars and would like some opinions.
I tried the WOW free trial and was not particularly impressed by the player dynamics. I hooked up with several groups and most of the players turned out to be snotty kids or jerks. The one good party I was with just fell apart as people logged out in the middle of the quest.
What I'd like is a game where I can find a few dependable allies, but also where if I can't get a party together I will be able to go it alone.
If there were any CH regulars to play with, that would make a big difference.

Before you criticize someone, first walk a mile in their shoes. If they get mad, you'll be a mile away. And you'll have their shoes.

Haven't played it myself (there's actually no monthly fee right? If so, that's pretty good ).

I played a bit during a previous free week-end and had problems finding my way around as the first expansion is focused on PvP (there were a lot of veterans around).
I don't have much time for MMOs, so I've been sticking to single-player RPGs. For a Might and Magic MMO, I would find the time though.

I have a friend where I work who has just started playing this game. I introduced him to HoMM3/WoG and loves it. But, he wanted to play a different game so he picked this one up. He's also played a lot of Baldurs Gate and such. His opinion of the game seems positive. He seems to like it a lot. Right now, he's playing as a Ranger. He wanted me to install it and get online and form a party with him, but the specs on my laptop won't take it. Some things he told me about the game, is that when you die, you are reborn in the last town you were at. He also mentioned something about an animal companion. You can also pick up colored dyes to change the color of your equipment, too. And when you make a magical weapon, it is exclusively for you only. I wish my laptop had more guts, but oh well.....
GW is strange mmo. I played it 1-2 months the Faction's
part of the game. It is strange because it has many many
quests,prety good story(for a mmo) but I realized that u can
make your char "top"(with top items, max lvl etc.) in a single
month. It has 2 basic parts the game, the role-playing char who
will play all the quests(based on partys all of them) and find new
equipment and unlock skills and the pvp-char who will take part
on the pvp-events(ally battles, arenas etc.). After 1-2 monts I realize
that the game started to be smth like "a fantasy Unreal Tournament" :-p
Many pvp events with players that are the same lvl, same items etc.(so
everything counts on "how u play").If u want a mmo that u will spent many
hours on pvp-events and not on "how to make my char stronger" then GW
will be ok, if u want smth more tradintional(spent hours on pc for few lvls :p)
then try smth else.

Don't know first hand but the MMORPG version of Dungeons and Dragons is 'supposed' to be very single person friendly, don't know how the groups ect are tho. Then again they touted WoW as single person friendly and it wasn't. If you don't have a great group, with the right equipment, you are pretty much sol for top items in WoW. Vanguard is another I've heard about, but never had a chance to try.
Warning, may cause confusion, blindness, raising of eybrows, and insanity.
Yeah but some of us don't have the 8 hrs that groups sometimes eat up (couple find the group, couple organizing the group, and a few more actually utilizing the group). So us people with 2-3 hrs at a time sometimes need solo friendly MMO's (cause we love to socialize ).

The reason why Guild Wars is the best MMO Role-playing game is only apparent when you are playing with a few people you know.
It's strong basically becuse it's a very very user-friendly massive co-op. So to get the most out of it (as I have) you need to try find a few like-minded people, who'll go through it with you and work with you.
So it's not all about getting 100 levels and the best items, that's not the hard bit. It's all about the role-playing and co-operation.
Also - one session (1 chapter) takes about 2 hours at most to complete (with a coupleo of side-quests and so on) so it's very easy to play through the thing regularly with short session.

I am considering getting Guild Wars. May even ask for it for my Birthday next month...still deciding though .
Anybody know a good starting point (regular, nightfall, or factions?) Would like to have as much content as possible for the least ammount possible. Any collections or suggestions? (Ie can I get just like Nightfall and Factions and have everything or something similar)?

I have both the original GW and GW: Factions. But I havent played them in a loooong while since it now takes eons to sownload all the neccessary files through their server So its neccesary you play often or at least once a week to not be overwhelmed by updates.
Anyway GW are for me a muuch better game than WoW and easier to get net.friends and find teams. The story and each Campaign are pretty good.
Its nice to see variation with each game, the stand alone expansions are pretty neat.
A short overview:
GW: Western/ Amazonas/ Norse Inspired.
Classes: Elementalist, Warrior, Mesmer, Monk, Ranger and Necromancer
Continent: Tyria
GW: Factions: Asian inspired.
Classes: Assassin and Ritualist
Continent: Cantha
GW: Nightfall: African inspired.
Classes: Dervish and Paragon
Continent: Elona
Factions and Nightfall gain new race skins for the original 6 proffessions from the first GW. I guess Nightfall gains new race skins for Assassin and the Ritualist as well. Havent gotten nightfall yet...

Ended up buying Factions (didn't want to waste a birthday presant on something I might not like)..and probably will start playing here soon. Thinking about joining a guild called P!nk. Hey if they like Pink (the singer) they can't be that bad hehe.

Good luck to you, hope the Guild is something for you When I used to play GW I had tried different norwegian guilds and a couple of others (US. Swedish, Danish etc) Many good guilds but most of them demanded I had headset and played constantly I ended up with a last norwegian guild, but since I havent played in a long while I guess they have kicked me by now. The time limit before kicking was about 2 weeks.
I'm certainly a fan of Guild Wars and I own all three sets to the game. Sad Mytical probably ended up buying the worst of the three - Faction's the worst in most players' opinion. I've not played Nightfall myself (have the game, just don't play it; I'm busy cartographing Cantha) but I hear it's excellent, and the features included sure are interesting. If nothing else I would have recommended Nightfall, but Faction's OK as well
Guild Wars and Maple Story are the only two MMORPGs I've played. Maple Story's a poor game (but it's free) because it got way too monotonous as time went on. Guild Wars is unique because it emphasizes skill, not time spent. Anyone can get a maximum-level character quickly and even top-tier equipment but still fail to do well, especially in PvP. I've thrashed and gotten thrashed by many other players, lamented at my foolish Elementalist (they're the typical Mage, for the uninitiated) as they attempted to tank enemy hordes, scolded a Warrior (these are the tanks, for the uninitiated) for thinking he's not a tank, marvelled at my allied Assassin (they're melee fighters, but stealthy and sneaky: think Blood Furies) for the way they teleport in and out and avoid getting hit. Skill dominates the game, and unless you get good you'll never make it to the upper echleons of PvP.
It's a unique thing in Guild Wars that once you leave a town, it's just you and the rest of the people in your party - you'll never meet another player-controlled character.

In Guild Wars there are AI-controlled characters called 'henchmen' (Nightfall introduced AI and player controlled [to an extent] characters called Heroes as well) whom you can recruit whenever you want. They're quite competent though not as good as a human of course. If you can't find a group, they'll always be there to help you. What I'd like is a game where I can find a few dependable allies, but also where if I can't get a party together I will be able to go it alone.
If you die, you are respawned at the last Resurrection Shrine, not town, you were at. You incur a death penalty - a penalty to your maximum HP and Mana (called Energy in Guild Wars). The death penalty can be worked off by gaining experience, or simply by entering a town. Some things he told me about the game, is that when you die, you are reborn in the last town you were at.

Yup, it's free. That's why it's the only MMORPG I can really playHaven't played it myself (there's actually no monthly fee right? If so, that's pretty good ).
What's your character name? I'm Jeydra Evenstar, Elementalist, my female incarnation. Minda Skabul / Aw Haw / Vote Ianboyd are three different characters with the same build I use for PvP Arena combat (I only do the Arenas; I find it most enjoyable and besides Heroes Ascent and GvG take a lot of preparation). These are the only characters I use however since the account's shared by 4 people.Mytical wrote:Btw I also have Nightfall now, and will soon have Prophecies . Nightfall is a lot more fun then Factions to be sure!
I've not been able to log on to Guild Wars recently, but I'll see if I can fix whatever problem it is soon.
I am going by the name Silver Pool (male). I pretty much have to play a male character or convince everybody I am my brother (which since we are twins I can do easily hehe) or it is rather difficult to play. *Sighs* why is it that guys in MMORPG's can't not flirt with a gal?

Nice to see you online a moment ago Mytical. I'm impressed by your choice of the Mesmer profession. They're certainly one of the harder professions to play, though all classes can be played badly. Unfortunately they're also one of the least valuable classes in PvE They just don't have as high a damage output as some of the other classes.
You should have gone female though. There's no problem with that. I've been a female Elementalist for 20 months and nothing's happened

Rejection comes easier when you don't see the other person.Mytical wrote: why is it that guys in MMORPG's can't not flirt with a gal?
Of course seeing how most female chars are played by males anyway it shouldn't be much of a problem unless you do something to let them know you're a woman.
