IGN Look At Upcoming Games

Unread postby Kalah » 05 Sep 2006, 14:27

In <a href="/http://pc.ign.com/articles/729/729853p1.html">this extensive article</a>, IGN have a look at some of the games scheduled for release this fall. The list includes big releases like <a href="/http://pc.ign.com/objects/674/674385.html">Neverwinter Nights 2</a>, scheduled for launch on October 17, <a href="/http://pc.ign.com/objects/736/736193.html">Dark Messiah</a> (Oct. 24), <a href="/http://pc.ign.com/objects/743/743961.html">Company of Heroes</a> (Sep. 11), and <a href="/http://pc.ign.com/objects/766/766546.html">Caesar IV</a> (Sep. 26). Also casually mentioned is another trivial affair:

<center><i>Oh, and there's something called <a href="/http://pc.ign.com/objects/770/770472.html">World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade</a> scheduled for release in November. We're assuming nobody cares.</i></center>

<center><img src=http://pcmedia.ign.com/pc/image/article ... 6.jpg><img src=http://pcmedia.ign.com/pc/image/article ... 0.jpg><img src=http://pcmedia.ign.com/pc/image/article ... g></center>

The <a href="/http://pc.ign.com/articles/729/729853p1 ... article</a> goes in-depth enough to include reviews and impressions as well as some hefty screenshots and videos. Only when you read this 5-page monster will you come to terms with how many great games and expansions are scheduled for release in the near future.

Exactly. The veneration people have for WoW -- one of the most fundamentally *boring* games I ever fell asleep in front of -- is baffling.

Caesar IV
*yawn* Not another Caesar game... Couldn't they have chosen some other civilization?! I'm bored of Romans and Egyptians. India would have been nice. Plus, CivCity: Rome was released recently too. Hmm, what to choose: the 4th game from a series I'm bored of beyond imagination or a game with the same theme, but that has a very different approach and is linked to one of the best games of all time?

Heck, WoW, though repetitive, is great compared to City of Heroes. CoH is sort of fun, but usually a pain in the butt.

Time for Blizzard to start working on Diablo 3.

@WretchedGnu
But going around doing the exact same thing over and over is fun....

But the old ones aren´t sHiNY anymore, so it must be upgraded.

Bah, I'd gladly buy a game that's not 3D. The old Impressions Games city builders looked great. But graphics aren't that much of a big deal for me. Ultimately, it's the kind of experience the city gives that matters: will it be a bustilng Roman metropolis, an Egyptian necropolis under the scorching desert sun, a nice Greek colony on the shores of the Mediterranean or a sprawling Chinese super-city with Tai-Chi parks and gracious temples? That's what matters to me in a city builder, the cultural experience. India would be an endless source of inspiration.

Trying to be optimistic, I guess they're just using Caesar IV to revive interest in the genre. If it goes well, I hope they make something more interesting afterwards.

You and a very limited number of people that would actualy buy the game for the gameplay. Êveryone else will buy it for the graphics, play it for a short while, maybe cheat to see all the sHINY buildings and then move on.

Well, I liked caesar 3... Infact, it's the first PC game I ever bought... And I loved it...

But I can't go back to it, it is too hard compared to let's say Rise of the Middle Kingdom (remember having tons of industries going waste when you built a new road, because that damn plebeian suddenly took the wrong turn?)...

the screenshot remotely resembled caesar 3 though... Perhaps I'll give it a try.

Now anyway, i don't care for 3d or 2d, as long as gameplay is good, and "graphics" aren't the end that justifies lousy gameplay. (does anyone know that game, homm5? Seems like one of those to me)
I have probably offended you in this post. if you take it too harshly, it's your own responsability. I, for my part, never intended to.

I don't know about "hard"... for me things are more like: once I got used to the gameplay concept of industries not needing direct access to housing, it was difficult to revert to games that don't have this (Caesar and Pharaoh). However, before Zeus arrived and introduced the concept, I was quite easily building large and efficient cities in Pharaoh (my first city-builder).

Right now, though, I don't think I'd be able to do much either way, concept or no concept. I haven't played a city builder in quite a while :D

WoW isn't that great... I'd prefer EQII anytime... Damn, I had some good times playing that game.

I know many people who love EQ, and they all say the second one sucked. They said the first one, fully patched, was better and more interesting.

I don't really know, I have never played either, but soon I am gonna try D+D Online out for a while - one of my friends knows the person who designed the game levels and says it is very good.

@ThunderTitan

Yeah, games these days don't have the simplicity and gameplay of the older games. Heroes III is a nice example of the old days...

No, but they're what sells the game in the first few weeks/months. And that's what companies care about.

And i never did manage to get good at Caesar 3 or Pharaoh.

I used to play Pharaoh daily and I got really good at it. IIRC, in the campaign I got as far as the first 10000 population city (Baki/Kuban I think it was named). After that a series of unfortunate events combined with RL resulted in the loss of my savegames :(

That's why you're always supposed to back them up. I still have saves from the 90's on my PC.

"Time for Blizzard to start working on Diablo 3"

I'd prefer if they made Starcraft 2 instead :). Stupid WoW, blizzard forgot the real quality stuff for that money-pot suck-*ss.

Great games are coming this autumn, I'm impatient to try most of them.

Starcraft 2 would be great, but I am a Warcraft/Diablo fan mostly. I'd prefer to see a sequel to Diablo because I follow the series more closely than any other Blizzard series.
