I seem to recall that in previous HOMM games, upgrading a creature was always less efficient than buying an upgraded creature (upgrades cost some multiple of the difference between normal and upgraded creature).
I just noticed that in V, this isn't the case - upgrades cost exactly the difference between the normal and upgraded unit. Indeed, I suspect that during a "week of forgery" it's better to buy normal creatures and upgrade. Can anyone confirm that?

No, only in HoMM 2 upgrading costs more. From 3 onwards it's just the difference.

Yes, it's cheaper to buy the regular and then upgrade during Forgery week.Ari wrote: Indeed, I suspect that during a "week of forgery" it's better to buy normal creatures and upgrade. Can anyone confirm that?

However, Hill forts are another matter. From what I have seen (I haven't actually calculated this yet):
tier 1 upgrades are free
tier 2 upgrades are at 25% cost
tier 3 upgrades are at 50% cost
tier 4 upgrades are at 75% cost
tier 5 upgrades are at normal cost
tier 6 upgrades are at 150% cost
tier 7 upgrades are at 200% cost
So hill forts are nice for low-level troops, but for the big guns, you are much better off buying the dwelling upgrade in town, even if the fort is close by- 6-7 units upgrade cost will quickly make up for the price of the dwelling!

Really? eek! Nice of them to tell us that at the hill fort.Qurqirish Dragon wrote:However, Hill forts are another matter. From what I have seen (I haven't actually calculated this yet):

In the case of level 7s, it actually does. For example to get titans, you need 30 gems (plus some lesser resources, but they are easy to gather).soupnazii wrote:but your not counting the resource cost for the dwellings.
To upgrade a giant to a titan costs 2 gems as well as double the price difference. Note that this means each titan upgraded in town saves 1 gem.
You may not need 15 weeks' worth of a level 7, but the resource cost is offset over time.
I find that the main thing limiting my upgrades is the cash anyway, and as I said, for upper level troops you will make that back fairly quickly.
