Alieans are attacking the earth! And they are far more advanced then us!But have no fear,X-Coms here
What can I say?A game featuring advanced research, training, building, and incredible tactical battles. No matter how many times you play it,it will always be one hell of a chalenge, and very interesting game.Lots of different alien races, very amuzing weapons, incredible atmosphere(even now, though the graphics and music are outdated).Although the second(terror from the deep) and third part(apocalypse) lack a bit compared to the first one,the whole series is an unreplacable classic.

I actually found Terror From the Deep better than the first one.. Apocalypse was a bit of a let down and I don't even want to mention XCOM IV: Interceptor(?), a space simulation !! Though the series remain with good memories; and I still remember the name Jurgen Faebler(not exactly sure about the surname) who had insane movement, reflex, and not to mention 150+ accuracy! He could hit anything in the eye from about 8-10 screens away ...
There were many weird tactics that worked so well though... I remember a friend of mine showing me how he wiped out colonies. He had many colonels and equipped them with uberpowerful grenades, and sent them to their doom! When aliens mind controlled or shot them, to my amazement, they didn't just drop, they tossed the grenades first, resulting in mass destruction!... Even better, with their very good armor, they survived the hits, and were back for duty in two weeks..A nice trick isn't it?

Could be, but it's far from my taste....a nice trick isn't it?
I tried all three X-Com series, and found like the best the second sequel, Terror from the Deep. Outstanding music, special alliens "uoeee" and most probably fact that this was first which I played.
I'm pretty sure that I still have them, somewhere....
‘‘To the matter of famous Ufopediea, as I mysteriously forgot it first time, where is Heroespedia - in game book with everything? - HoMM3 had nothing like that with exception of Tavern rumours, HoMM4- has partially comply to with *elder mage appendixes* and HoMM5-final has nothing? (I didn't play it yet, bur like to know it, recalling that beta has something like that, but it's still cannot match Ufopedia spirit....) ’’

X-Com and Fallout are my favoured games series . Even Heroes can't match them...
*ducks*
If you're looking for something similar to X-COM, we've listed all known projects at StrategyCore here.
As for commercial games, the Silent Storm series by Nival is excellent. UFO: Aftermath and Aftershock are also decent games.

Before you criticize someone, first walk a mile in their shoes. If they get mad, you'll be a mile away. And you'll have their shoes.
We have instructions up on how to download and install UFO: Enemy Unknown here (from Fileplanet, so it should be legal). We also just posed a retro review of the game here
