Auto-Adjusting Random Terrain (HoMM 3 Mod Idea/Suggestion)

Unread postby Macros the Black » 13 Feb 2023, 23:14

I've only played HotA so maybe this already exists in a mod, but I had an idea for the map editor that I think would be cool.

A problem you run into when playing custom maps is that the terrain is pre-selected by the mapmaker. If the map allows choosing any faction, one player can get lucky and start on a terrain that fits them and another could start in a swamp. That's why people tend to play randomly generated maps to make things fair.

But wouldn't it be cool if there was a terrain type the mapmaker could place that just automatically adjusts to be the right terrain for the player that spawns on it? Like how we could choose to make neutral towns be the same type as a player, we could choose to make this terrain fit a player. You can place all the adventure map objects and if the player chooses Tower, they're all snowed over on snow terrain. If they choose Fortress, it's all swamp.

And maybe you could even make a neutral terrain. If all factions are played, it will always be desert, but if some factions are missing then it could randomly pick any terrain that no player would benefit from. Maybe you could even link it to be the same as a random neutral town as well.

The terrain could just look like a greyed out version of grass terrain for simplicity. Or be the color of the associated player.

Anyway, it's just an idea I've had for a while and I thought I might as well post it for any mod makers out there. Maybe it's too hard to do? (technically you would need 9 extra terrains, one for each player and 1 neutral) I feel like if this existed it would also just make map making more fun because you could get creative without having to force the player to be a certain faction, and your map could play and look different each time.

(or maybe I'm just a noob and this exists already in some capacity?)
You'd think Darkmoor was a ghost town, but instead there's plenty of life among the dead.
