I screwed up Isabel when leveling

The leveling system in HoMM 5 threw me for a bit of a loop.

I gave Isabel a lot of random skills, not realizing that it would hit a level maximum at 18.

Now she has a whole lot of random skills and abilities that don't work very well together.

When it finally let me get to level 19, it only let me add a limited number of skills and abilities, not necessarily the ones I wanted to add.

Just wondering:

1. What determines which skills you get to add after leveling? Does it pick at random the ones you can do, or might it be too late to train certain skills past level 18?

2. If you have a skill, but not the ability that goes with the skill, is the skill basically useless?

3. Why do certain skills such as Advanced Counterstrike not appear on the skills/ability menu tab?

There is a random element to this. I recommend reading the Fan-made Manual located here, to get a "feel" for what to avoid. There are "%s" that enter into things and some skills will not have much of a chance to be beneficial within a given faction. i.e Haven w/ Destruct is a no-go 4 me.. When in doubt, it's always better to go with a racial or a perk.

You are looking for the skill wheel. Make sure you have the wheel appropriate for the version you are playing.

First of all if you mean original HOMM5(not addons) then messing up Isabel is no big loss, as you wont control her anymore. You will have her in last mission for humans(where in fact you should concentrate on boosting Godric, as he partially is transferred to later levels.(at least partially)) Isabel on other hand wont be under your control anyway(not 100% sure but at leas in no mission that matters so forget about her).

2. If you have a skill, but not the ability that goes with the skill, is the skill basically useless?

Not sure what you mean. Think it was not possible to get ability by not having appropriate skill. That is you cant chose fallen knight without having dark magic in first place.

3. Why do certain skills such as Advanced Counterstrike not appear on the skills/ability menu tab?

Counterstrike is core ability like necromancy,artificer, etc. It appears in different tab, near to hero specialization rather than rest of skills.

I guess I'm just wondering if the skill can be used without the ability.

For instance, can basic counterstrike allow me to upgrade a peasant all the way to a priest, if I only have the skill without the abilities that go with it?
