Heroes and Combat
Heroes in battle was what I always wanted in HoMM, and why I liked HoMM4 so much. I mean it's HEROES of Might and Magic, not Creatures-on-mounts-who-hide-behind-their-troops-and-run-like-chickens-when-there's-nothing-left-to-hide-behind of Might and Magic! The only place in HoMM4 where I used creatures was the Stronghold campaign, otherwise creatures were there to defend towns (I think there was a point in the Haven campaign when I used a large group of creatures to weaken a huge army in my path though, but that was the only place), heroes and heroes alone did the fighting. (Yup, I'd sometimes save and reload 50 times till I could get past a particularly difficult battle with just my heroes, when I could have brought a bunch of units and get through easy.) That's how I always wanted to play HoMM... and now that'll be gone I guess...
While I liked the HoMM4 style completely, my suggestion for a balance (although way too late now), to meet the ones that didn't halfway, would be something like this: 7 creature slots and 1 special hero slot. Can fill creature slots with either creatures or heroes and special hero slot only with a hero that HAS LEADERSHIP skill and only if there are NO HEROES in the other 7 slots. If the special slot is occupied, the creatures in the army will get the skill bonuses HoMM3 style and, if all creatures die in combat, the hero will step down from it's horse and charge alone. In such an event, if the hero wins the battle, he or she will automatically retreat to the nearest town controlled by that player with a free special slot afterwards. If there are none, hero will be lost. If there are heroes in battle, then any creatures that might join them will be given bonuses HoMM4 style. Also, for proper balance, ONLY heroes that are on the battlefield may cast spells! Heroes that occupy the special slot only offer bonuses to their armies.
