Here is another TBS, Heroes-like game. First part of this game came out in 2004 (as I remember.. or 2005) second is planed on first Q of 2007
Most players would say that its Heroes clon. Well.. its close to that but still there are some diffrences. Town building is much more complicated, not to mention that you can build towns yourself (if you have enough resources and peasants). Also hiring creatures is more like H5 training - i.e you train them from peasants.
bad sides of first part are:
- just one faction (haven-like) (though there are many neutral fantasy creatures)
- no campaign
good sides:
- its 2d
- it has some fresh ideas
BTW sequal is going to be much better.

I agree. Scale seems to be a widespread problem with games today. Buildings and armies are so oversized that everything looks overcrowded. Even chess pieces are spread out more than we see here.
Obviously, they are doing this to provide more graphic detail. But I would be willing to sacrifice a lot of that to get things back into proportion. I am perfectly happy to move icons across a map. For 3D, I'd say Battle for Middle Earth got it about right.

Before you criticize someone, first walk a mile in their shoes. If they get mad, you'll be a mile away. And you'll have their shoes.
