Heroes IV - Windows 10 - Crashes

Preface: We acquired a used dog in March. He is very attached to me. He is a jumper. My good computer is in a basement level room with only a metal circular stair. We put a baby gate across the top of the stair to keep the used dog from hurting himself. My wife won't allow me to use my good computer while the used dog is around because she fears he will jump over the fence and kill himself. I am using a laptop (not new) during the day now. It won't run a new game so I loaded Heroes IV. I upgraded to Windows 10. In combat the game freezes up frequently, to the point I am loosing more hair and I don't have a lot left and I need it in the northeast US.

I have searched the forum using all kinds of subjects that would seem to fit and have seen a lot for Heroes III but almost nothing for Heroes IV.

I can't be the only guy who has Heroes IV on a laptop (not new) and a used dog.

Anyone out there who can help???

Thanks Karmakeld! In reading the thread, many users who wrote had the same issue, crashing during combat and always when the opponent is making a move. I am in the last scenario of the Gathering Storm which has been one of my favorites, but seem to have to restart during almost every battle and sometimes multiple times.

Hoping someone has found a solution.

By the way, searching "H4 won't start" only returned your message above.

Try setting affinity to a single CPU core. For example, try making a heroes4.bat file in game directory with following content:
start /affinity 1 heroes4.exe
(assuming that main game executable is called heroes4.exe). Then start the game (as administrator) using this heroes4.bat file.

snaphooker, it can be made compatible with win 10. Have you looked through the links posted?
