M&M 8 install problem

Unread postby Variol » 04 Feb 2016, 19:14

I'm trying to reinstall the game via disc, but the install program will not launch. I have tried various compatibility settings, but nothing works. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm running Windows 7 now.

Never had an issue with the install in Win7. Go to the disk in Windows Explorer and manually use the autorun.

If that doesn't launch it you probably have antivirus blocking it.

What I have run into more often is DirectX and graphics failures when the installed program starts.

I have been clicking on the autorun file, because it does not launch automatically. What can I do if it is a Norton antivirus problem?

I'm running Win7 64 bit and I just pulled out my old MM8 install disk and autolaunch still works. When I went to e:\_autorun\autorun.exe it also worked. Something on your system is blocking the install.

If it's the antivirus you have to add it to the list of approved programs within the antivirus program. What I would do is lock down the internet (if hardwired pull the cord, if wireless just disable it), disable the antivirus, and try the install. Of course re-enable everything before reconnecting to the Internet.

It could just as easily just be the disk data is damaged in which case it's a waste of time.

Last option is still of course just buying it from GoG. Sorry I can't be of more help.

It didn't work. It's frustrating. I'm sure it's not the disc. There's not a mark on it.

I know this is small comfort, but misery loves company...

I have not been able to reinstall HOMM IV and have had it on this computer in the past.

I tried it on my wife's laptop with Win10, but no dice either. She does have the same anti-virus program though.

I tried to look for any leftover files for MM8, but could not find anything. I'm pretty sure I have the latest version of DirectX. Is there a way to check my version?

Yes, it looks like I have the patch on my PC. Should I try to remove it?
