M&M: Clash of Heroes Hits the Stores

Unread postby arturchix » 06 Dec 2009, 18:01

After several delays, making it the third installment in the Might and Magic series since Ubisoft took over the M&M brand from 3DO back in 2003, this week was released Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes on Nintendo DS. You might remember it was developed by Capybara Games to which CH spoke earlier this year . Weÿll most likely have our own review but check out what IGN had to say

about the game, before awarding the game 8.9 out of 10 while Metacriticÿs average for now is 86/100:

Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes is a downright awesome strategy game, pure and simple. The visuals are a beautiful mix of classic Super NES designs while using DS's 2D capabilities to its fullest, the music is captivating and well-produced, and the story is surprisingly rich, filled with characters I actually cared about and plot twists that were well executed. There are some definite areas for improvement, including the removal of some of the game's inherent guess work that comes with learning new units, jumping into battles, or taking out bosses, but the effort you'll put in is greatly rewarded. The game's story mode will take players well over 30 hours, and it's filled with side quests, bounty hunts, puzzle battle challenges, hidden units and artifacts, and some great characters along the way. Leading the pack is the battle mechanic though, and it's the game's crowning achievement to say the least. The five races are well balanced, units are a blast to use, level up, and strategize with, and the core system itself is strong enough to facilitate plenty of expansion in what I hope flourishes into a full-on franchise.

Maybe this is a reason to buy DS? What do you think?

It's always good to see a Might & Magic product released. No matter what format it is. Hopefully it will do well, and continue the series further.

Another step in Ubi's policy of making M&M games for every platform, every playing-type. Almost can't wait for their release of M&M Tekken-style duel game for PS3. ;)

At least it's a puzzle game, involving some brain usage...

That would be awesome, I really would like to kick Raelag's ass with Agrael, or punch Biara in her face, or murder that stupid Isabel.

Still, I suppose we'll see an action-rpg in the next few years. And HeroesVI of course. :)

Wait, so it wasn't released already? Then how come I've read quite a number of reviews on it?

This game is good news for fans. The more productivity, the more odds of a better H6. It wasn't my dream for the DS, though I understand the steps needed to make Heroes a finely polished game someday. Good work, and let us hope that the sales go up for this particular title....

BestBuy is having a sale. The game now only costs $20.

Sometimes companies send out copies in advance to reviewers...

Will play it after Zelda. It's not out in europe until the end of january :/.

Thundertitan: That's not correct, at least not in online stores. You can find plenty of very good cheap ds games, although not as many as cheap psp games.

Very good reviews, although maybe Ubisoft have been generous.. Especially considering it got several very early reviews.

The writer for the web comic Penny Arcade had some nice things to say about it halfway down his first post last Friday.

I got it over the weekend. It's actually an excellent game; get it if you have the chance. Whatever the complaints about manga, you'll forget to care once you've switched it on.

@Kalah: Surely that was 3DO's policy. The only difference I see is at least Ubi has been releasing finished games in different styles on different platforms.

The game's a lot of fun! They did a good job. It reminds me a lot of Etherlords II with matching puzzles instead of cards games. The story line isn't terribly interesting -- basically the same as any JRPG you could name, but at least the characters aren't obnoxious punks like in Heroes V.

It's also worth pointing out that the game uses three colors: red, blue, and yellow, and not green or purple! So it's perfectly playable by those of you like me who are color blind.

Er, the Necropolis faction uses both green and purple, and Sylvan's color scheme is green, yellow and blue.

Speaking of that, I've actually seen other color-blind people having trouble with the game on the internet. Someone whose condition must be different from yours complained about colors of Sylvan.

I've been playing Clash of Heroes and it's really great. Probably the best DS puzzle game of 2009. Although, the whole time while using the stylus, I keep thinking to myself: "they could totally create a proper 2D HOMM for DS."
