Heroes 3: Favorite Battle Mage
Gundula is every bit as good as Crag Hack, imho.
But, Dessa is a logistics specialist and wins by default

For some reason I don't consider Zubin to be a good choice for first hero. Cannot help.
Vey, Ogre special is best asset here, close second would be Oris. Stronghold need to learn spells as fast as possible to have unmatched accelerating curve. Power and might.

Ah, the killer class.
Dessa, Gundula and Terek. 3 brillant heroes. Since you are not guaranteed to get the Haste spell as a Barbarian player, but you need it dearly, TEREK is the best hero for me. Later on, with Mass Haste, his special will shuffle the movement order which is interesting.
If youe guild(s) HAVE Haste, Dessa and Gundula are the better option since the special is better.
No choice here.

Zubin and Oris are the only Battle Mages I'd prefer a Barbarian over. Subpar specials and starting skills. Zubin should lead a Tower army.
Gird depends, but I find myself casting a lot of Lightning Bolts when I'm playing Stronghold, so there's that. Does Sorcery have an effect on the T-birds special at all? Probably not, huh.
Saurug - special resource heroes are very useful with lots of towns on the map. Stronghold focuses very strongly on one resource (even gold is hardly ever a problem) so I tend to abuse the Marketplace and get Cyclopes and AB's as quickly as possible. And Resistance is neat.
Still doesn't compete with Vey, Dessa, Terek and Gundula who are all simply awesome. Terek is the most fun, though. He gets my vote.

I went with Gird because of the Sorcery Specialty. If you get a decent offensive spell in the paltry Barbarian's Mage Guild, Gird's specialty can be quite useful.
Dessa would have been my second choice with the ever popular Logistics. In fact, maybe I'd change my vote except to Dessa except he's ugly as a box of frogs. Oris on the other hand is quite beautiful, if only she had a better specialty. That Eagle Eye is about the least desirable and worthless skill/specialty in the whole game … except maybe second only to Mysticism.
Gundula's specialty of Offense is pretty good too, but again, she has a face like a smashed hermit crab.

Oris, because no one will vote for her on account of Eagle Eye... girl needs some love too.

Voted for Terek.
The guy has two very good skills to start with and his specialty makes your slower than avarage Barbarian troops to move much faster. And let us not forget the good ol' "bonus is greater when used on lower level units". In Heroes III, Stronghold's perhaps biggest problem on battlefield is speed, so hiring a Hero with the Haste spell as specialty becomes a primary object. Of course Tactics skill helps a lot. Now, the only thing left to make this combo optimized is to get Air Magic...

I never said that Logistics specialists aren't overpowered, but still I wouldn't like to play with a decreased logistics, not even against it.

Choosing the best Battle Mage is easy - Dessa or Terek, it barely matters which. But now that I'm thoroughly sick of the sound of coconuts, and first-strike walkovers, who to pick as favourite? They're all either useless (Oris), or sensible boring and conventional (the rest).
I'll pick Saurug, coz he's a welcome sight in your Tavern when you're playing Tower or Castle.
And I like the idea of Resistance on a magic wielder - being able to deal it out and then refuse to take it back.
