">positive review of the Hammers of Fate expansion at GameSpy</a>. Unlike GameSpot, William Abner noticed the subtlelty behind the design of the dwarven faction and actually used the word "cool" three times in a single page. On the pro side, he lists the uniqueness of the Fortress creatures, their abilities and the simultaneous turns. He even had a nice little success story about the artificial intelligence:
<i>"In one scenario, the AI emerged from an underground entrance, captured a city that was undefended, took over all of the nearby resources, bought up all of the castle units, and then played cat and mouse with my hero, daring me to try to take back the castle. So while the AI in the campaigns offers little to no resistance, the map missions are much more of a challenge."</i>
However, the expansions loses points for the dwarven hero bug, the weak campaigns (with a nod to the fan-made content) and the infamous cutscenes. The final score is 3 and a half stars out of 5.

It actually is good. 50% is average. 70%is closer to very good

So that is why people complain about 80% when their favorite game "should have had" 90%? Isn't there a site trying to redefine these grades? That would be welcome. I don't understand how 70% can be average, when 50% really IS average. Am I making a problem now?
not really many people complain about this .... I think Gamespot or at least one of the big three is redefining the ratings to be more representative of the actual scale, but the others are still sticking with what they have .... a good clue is to look at something like Gamerankings, this will show that most review sites us a 3 as probably the lowest mark they give (except for something truly remarkably disgraceful like Big Rigs over the Road Racing)
but yeah, it's a bit sucky

Well, I've noticed that lots of respectable review sites have started to give great games 5 out of 10 or less, and among these titles are Neverwinter Nights 2 and Gothic III. Even more, 1UP, after it gave Dark Messiah 4 out of 10, announced that, you see, they are reworking their rating system and that 4 is average. Later they gave NWN2 5 out of 10 but pulled it after fan community was going nuts. Of course, their new review system wasn't a hindrance to give several crappy console games a grade up to 10.stefan.urlus wrote:not really cleanpea, most of these review sites have skewed results .... 50% is actually pretty awful and 70% is average
I don't really care anymore about any reviews unless they come from people in M&M fan communities I know I can trust. Even the biggest reviewers have proved that their reviews are often very biased plus they are hiding behind a statement that their review is just an opinion, like it wouldn't hurt the game sales. And it is more than clear that the reviewers won't ever hurt the companies who advertise on their sites, like EA. Maybe Ubisoft really is an outsider in the gaming industry.

Now I must read it to see how serious you are.Angelspit wrote:Unlike GameSpot, William Abner noticed the subtlelty behind the design of the dwarven faction and actually used the word "cool" three times in a single page. No,50% is the average. Its just that in these days people dont want to play average games, they want excelent ones.stefan.urlus wrote:not really cleanpea, most of these review sites have skewed results .... 50% is actually pretty awful and 70% is average
Some meaning 1Some of the Fortress units are pretty unique, though, and not just your basic short, bearded fellows toting axes.
Well the review is good actually.AS,you gave a really wrong impression of it

Please, i've never seen a game get less then 40%, no matter how crappy it was. 50% usualy means it either a crappy game without any awful bugs, or an average one with some awful bugs.

That's because you thought I wasn't serious. Three stars and a half on GameSpy is pretty good (Winds of War got 40% there three years ago), especially for an expansion pack (try to find an expansion that got a better score than the game it is based on).DaemianLucifer wrote:Well the review is good actually.AS,you gave a really wrong impression of it

In my mind, this is what grades mean:
1/10 = Selftorment for maschochists
2/10 = Fraud
3/10 = Crap
4/10 = Bad (Unfinished, seriously designflawed and/or buggy)
5/10 = Average at best
6/10 = Average to Kinda good
7/10 = Designflawed and/or too buggy to be recommended
8/10 = Good!
9/10 = Very good!
10/10 = Masterpiece!
Since I haven't played HoF I can't say what I think about it but I agree that it's hard to review expansions.
But considering the new content, better A.I (WTF?! Did I read that right?!?!) and the bugs I'd say 70% is the minimum they can give it.

Err, what does that mean? Does designflawed and/or too buggy game really sound better? That 6 is better than 7?
Here's my grade system:
4/10 = below average
5/10 = Average and uninspiring game
6/10 = Could have been a good game but is somewhat flawed
7/10 = good game
8/10 = great, have some minuses, has hidden potential
9/10 = excellent, strongly recommended
10/10 = masterpiece, you can't pass this one
