What a selection of great heroes! Leave Clany and Ufretin out of it, and everyone works.
One way or another EVERY one of those may bring victory with their abilities. Against the Dungeon I might go for Thorgrim, against Castle for Mephala, on a larger map for Kyrre or even Ryland and on a smaller map either Ivor or - if on impossible - Jenova. So "best" really depends.
No pick.

ZZZzzzz....
This is though indeed. However, I still proceed to make a pick.
So let's see ... Ivor you'll only really pick for his elves. Sure, he has good skills but the specialty doesn't compete. Jenova is lovable but really only on impossible or as a a secondary hero. Starting with one skill on advanced is no advantage here, because most of the others start with two good skills. Nice looks too. Kyrre has best specialty in most maps and good skills, but isn't my favourite really. Mephala is another hero with excellent skills and specialty and I think she's the best-looking hero in the game (competes with Jenova though). Ryland on the other hand is the best diplomat in the game, coming with both leadership and diplomacy. Specialty isn't too good though but he looks like a ranger. A potential choice. Finally there's Thorgrim, the most magic-invincible hero in the game. I don't like his looks though.
So this time it boils down to Jenova, Mephala and Ryland. However it looks like Ryland will lose to feminine beauty this time and because Jenova is more of a secondary hero, I'll let Mephala win.

there is alot of good rangers. kyrre (logistics) are realy good on big maps and such heroes afaik are usualy banned in tournaments. mephala with armor can save some troops too. but personaly i voted ivor since elves are best units of level and you can do half game just with them and he also have ofensive.
I was going to pick Kyrre seeing I'd picked Dessa for Battlemage, but deciding that Logistics specialists are much too overpowered to pick, I went with the next obvious choice Ivor. Powerful speciality since Elves retain deadly effectiveness straight up to endgame, and doubling your Grand Elf stack early just fuels Rampart's strong early-game.
I'm a hypocrite because I suggested that all life is sacred and should not be wasted without good reason.

Yay, Rangers.
For now my favorite is Thorgrim. It used to be Kyrre, then Mephala, then Ryland.
Kyrre and Ryland can (map-speed wise) afford to take a few Dendroid Soldiers to guard the Elves early on, which in turn gets more out of the Battle Dwarves, which in turn postpones the need to take Pegasi along and endanger them in battle.
Mephala is a double-edged sword though. Armorer's bug of increasing damage done by castle turrets costs precious Elves. Then again, you might have lost those Elves anyway fighting archers out in the open, if it wasn't for Armorer.
I never liked Ivor much, I don't think the Elves really need to be boosted further. I usually don't bother with Archery altogether in this game, unless I'm playing Tower.
I think Clancy is not so bad, makes your stack of War Unicorns the fastest walker in the game (except for Crystal Dragons) and on larger maps they can become better than Naga Queens and Dread Knights.
Ufretin isn't worth it though.
Jenova is out, I'm not picking a secondary here. If I get her early, I'll take advantage of Adv. Archery and have her flag mines, then when she's gained a few levels I promote her to castle guard.
Resisting an enemy's spells feels awesome and that is going to be the deciding factor until whim takes me elsewhere!

Tough choice. There are plenty of good Rangers here to select from.
The question is, which creature specialist you dig the most? Which secondary skills are the ones that give best profit for your money?
Some people will definately disagree with me, but here's my reasoning:
Clancy's unicorns are faster and stronger but I still really don't see him as candidate for primary hero selection. I dig the pathfinding skill but because of his specialty, I exclude him from the list. Unicorns, I think, are quite capable even without additional bonuses.
Ivor is a great choice. Elves, Rampart's only shooters need additional bonuses to help them against the enemy that will come to them as soon as he can. Archery and offense are great skills and fit in nicely with Ivor's Elvish theme.
Jenova's Witnesses... I mean Jenova and her followers seem to have business skills quite in order and in early phases of the scenario her specialty helps the player, even more so on resource poor maps. She starts with one skill on advanced level that can be seen as a disadvantage. I believe some of you agree with this wholeheartedly.
Kyrre is a great starting hero, there's no doubt. Logistics specialists rank always at the top in my hero selection plans.
Mephala's specialty can save your units from much punishment but be careful when approaching enemy castles: those shooting towers will take advantage of a bug related with the armory skill.
Ryland is another excellent choice for starting hero. Diplomacy and leadership is a powerful combination and add his specialty to the summ and you'll know that hiring Ryland is something to really consider.
I'll tell you that treemen boosted with extra speed and att+def can really make you smile.
Thorgrim starts with one skill only, doesn't it look suspicious to you?
But if you dig his specialty, resistance, which most of my H3 playing friends seem to do, and other people most likely, then he's your guy.
Ufretin, the Dwarf is the last on my list. Sorry to say this, Ufretin, but
your Dwarves are at their best with their mining skills and their banking skills as well. Thumbs up for Dwarven treasary! (which has nothing to do with this hero's skills and specialty...)
With all this said, I choose Ivor to lead my armies to victory.
Second goes to the logistics specialist. (Kyrre)
Third place I award to Dendroid specialist. (Ryland)

He's my very favorite Ranger
with his magnificent Resistance Skill.
Ivor is 2nd
Elves/Grand Elves Specialty Rocks!
Kyrre is 3rd
Love that Logistics!
Going just on looks alone, I'd pick Ryland.I like the way he looks like a really rugged Ranger.

Well, that probably is a consequence of Ryland birdwatching and speaking with our feathered friends all day to hone his Diplomacy skills.BigThingWithHolesInIt wrote:Ryland's face reminds me of a bird. But that may be the Diplomacy icon interfering. Do I play this game too much?
Just ask Wimfrits, he should know.

Slowly we discover that our "big scoffer" is a warm-hearted holy-warrior, who cares for the innocent..
