Did I? First we had E, N and L (2 safe letters left), and then a P I didn't see (didn't show up in used letters either), then R and Y (0 safe letters left), A (1 safe letter although ShadowLiberal should be hanged, my bad), O (no safe letters), I (with no safe letters you're hanged, 1 safe letter left), M (TT uses it) and finally U (still 0).

He didn't miscalculate, he just use the more archaic rules where the free points go the guy right after the hanged poster instead of after the hangman posts...
