I have no much of idea, but usually equation symbol is going first. Other common problem are separators, it must be used the one which is set in 'Local Settings' (generally it's only between colon or dot, yeah function names can be also localized)
Did you tried to look in the help file (F1 or Shift+F1 and click on the function)?

Any slight change can made it, though I have no idea if you are updating from some old template or just 'filling'. I expect the second case to be more close to the truth however

Localize function names?? Hopefully it's not the case, my Word is in English.

In fact it never happened to me to stumble upon merge in Word. Although did you specified a data source? (ie from which fields it should be merged, usually list from somewhere else)
