In Firefox here are plugins for everything, for close button I think that I was using in past TabMixPlus or, according to description, also can be helpful just Close Button.

In TabMixPlus it must be set in plugin settings.

I don't like it since it messed up my "save tabs upon closing" extension, and I can't get the satndard setting to work. Otherwise there are a couple of nice features.
