MM 6 & 7: Does perception help?

I just ran through the Sewer with a level 1 party (was hoping to find some gold to buy a spellbook to test something) and apparently you don't need Perception at all to find the sewer key. Just click on any grate; you'll find the key in the first one you click. Clicking more times gives you random loot and sometimes damage.
You'd think Darkmoor was a ghost town, but instead there's plenty of life among the dead.
