Robenhagen has kindly put together a banner for the contest. Here's a small version, but check out the contest page for the full pic :).

are we allowed to make maps only, or can we make a .pak file too with our map (for changing the look of the units or the text messages for instance)?

Base game only, no mods, if that's what you mean.

Ok, but that way I won't be able to make a simple message box or fly sign as the path for the message is searched in the .pak files and not in the .h5m file :( . Or is there a way to make it search in your map file instead?

All can be done by writing scripts. If you want an example, I wrote how to make a message box here:

Holy cow, that's insane.... and people thought the H4 editor was complex! I haven't actually opened the editor yet, so I didn't realise how difficult this might be. I hope I'm not asking too much for people to make an "interesting" map.

In all honesty, if this map editor is too difficult for the average joe (ie non-programmer) to use, I'll change the contest requirements. Can people who've use it let me know, though?

Even average Joe can make a great map, because map can be great also without tons of complicated scripts. But if someone who don't know anything about programming wants to make a script, he will surely get help in Mapmaking Guild (where many H5 scripts are already explained).

My problem is that the game seems to search for the text file (that containing the message) in the .pak and not in the .h5m file. I'm obviously doing smth wrong if it's only me. I'll continue posting in the mods section cuz it's offtopic here.

I personally feel the H-V editor is too complicated for the average-joe per-se! I made several maps in the previous Heroes games and I personally think the Heroes 4 map editor was easy to use, but the Heroes 5 map editor don't even come close to being easy, even without the scripts but this is my personal opinion.

im going to check out just how small a "small" map size is :) see what ideas i can come up with. as for scripting, if it wasnt for the language and using correct syntax of that language, plus properly using variables and triggers, then it wouldnt be hard to script. i think anyone who says it easy to use, has had programming experience. ill be giving scripting a try myself.
