What version, DOS or Windows? If Windows, see if setting affinity to one core does anything.

I have the HOMMII CD with HOMM1 and King's Bounty on it also.

It is impossibe. HoMM 1 and HoMM 2 use different sets of audio tracks so You should have CD1 with HoMM 1 (incl. King's Bounty on CD) and CD2 with HoMM 2. Anyway setting affinity to a single CPU core can help. Also try to disable music and sound effects in game options. The game is incompatible with some modern sound drivers/devices. If this helps try updating sound drivers and/or reducing Sound hardware acceleration level in dxdiag.
