Two interviews. JVC talks broadly about his visions. The first one has two pages (which I missed for the first time).

Hurray for the continuation of the "games you don't actually own" trend... i for one can't wait for the inevitable backlash when the 1st company doing this goes under and no one can play those games they bought from it anymore...

Dude, no, getting more women justifies anything, it's not the same for games...

Also, making a game you yourself don't enjoy is exactly how the market get's saturated with crap... "they'll buy it so it's ok if i leave it with some bugs" etc...

Otherwise, sure, listening to your audience is a great way to get new ideas and improve stuff, just don't ever take the info at face value, most fans suck at knowing what they actually want.

Exactly, and that's what happened with H5. "The Market" hated H4, so they got rid of it and carried on ignoring it entirely. "The Market" loved H3, so they decided it was best to copy most features (if not all) from H3 and build from that (Note: this "building" part should be taken with a pinch of salt). "The Market" wanted shiny 3D graphics, they gave them what they wanted. "The Market" loved Warhammer, WarCraft and Lord of the Rings, so they *cough* designed *cough* units they thought would please a large group of people.

And what's funny is that sales wise H4 did fine for a TBS... and bloody incredible for a game released in the state it was.

I agree, listening only to "the market" is a great way to be one-and-done with a game title. Fortunately, JVC has a little bit of experience with games spanning multiple iterations. EA hired him to help make sure the next release of C&C isn't the last. Isn't that a good thing?

Again, it was due to the great success of H3. It made the series more popular than ever before. Many people started playing HoMM with H3. It still is the most popular and widely known game in the series (not necessarily the best, though). Back in 2002, a lot of people were willing to buy H4 blindfolded, just because of the fact that it was THE sequel to H3.

Shouldn't CnC4 be the epic finale of the CnC saga?

Nah, NWC knew how to tease fans with their "secretive" hype surrounding their weak expansion packs. Stuff like "Beautiful new adventures!", "Dozens of new maps!", "Cool new artifacts!", "Fantastic new creatures!", "Multiplayer support!", "Better AI!"... etc. Like it was magically going to change into a different game! :butterfly:

Personally i dont think jvc is the cure to any modern game series now. Yeah he has a very good back catalogue but it seems in modern times things he's worked on have not been up to scratch. Leaving trion might have been more of a push, the game they are working with at the moment seems to be highly funded and has a good backing behind it. Why would someone who has wanted to work on a mmorpg project leave when he has a major role to work on within it.

Pls, H3's expansions shold have taught you the lesson already...

What the game needed for that was simple balance and stability patches...

Actually, I was talking about NWC expansions in general, not just H3 or H4 xpacks, and the thing is, whether you accept it or not, they still managed to make people believe in their hype. Yes, maybe not the same people every time, but still, like you mention it, even "a simple balance fix" would have been enough to lead people to have false hopes and expectations over a really weak expansion pack.
