well I always like to take out the mages first, if I see some intricate patterns of hand movement, or hear chanting - that's who I'm looking for, I don't see that as a problem

But how are you going to identify chanting without spellcraft?Especially in the heat of battle. Its not a quiet place. If you see him,you can easilly distinquish him as a mage. But not if you hear him.

He'll know it's chanting; he just won't know what spell is going to be launched.

How?The battle is not a quiet place. How are you going to distinguish one sound amongst all the yelling and crying unless you know what to focus on?

because i am not standing in the middle of a battle - i am to the side, sniping with my bow, which would allow me to see most of the battle and its participants ....

See,yes. If you spot a mage,go right for him.But how can you hear him chanting through all of the noise?Especially if you are out of the battle.

No,she said someone was chanting, and that only I recognized it as a fireball.Your character doesnt know what the chanting is.Maybe its someone praying,or whining(those things happen in battles).Unless you fought dozen mages before, you would never recognize it as spell casting.

Ok, hehe keep the bickering to a minimum. Ok as stated nobody knows where the chanting (of whatever kind) is coming from. So it is a moot point if Stefan knows if it is a spell or not. As combat has yet to fully engage the chanting was very audible. Yes the only person who knows it is a Fireball is DL, but anybody arround can tell it is something unusual (ie a prayer to a god or magic). Now, the clerics know it is not prayer..they don't need to shout out like that, but they and DL are the only people who know for sure it is not some divine invokation. All clear? Good :).

Who is where in the fight? I think someone is on a roof and someone is sniping from a window. One of the thieves is perched to backstab the half giant. The chaos priest is getting to the fight and the other cleric is walking towards the fight with a dire badger. I know I'm missing someone.
And the chickens. Those damn chickens.

Well the battle front is Chaos, people are still a little scattered, but the good news is that badger of yours is causing some real damage. Especially those two theifs that seem to have bad luck are not having a good time with mr Badger.

If my badger dies, I'll summon a new one. If he lives, I'll sit back a bit and wait to see if anybody needs healing. If everyone looks ok, I'll get in on the attack. I won't be aiming for the Super Vagabond with the armor though.

Btw, stefan, the horn is a normal horn. It was the sound that called it from the rocks above, not any magic. The mage just decided to call it another way (bright lights!)
